Description
Original, very early 1960s (1960 to be exact) Hank Mobley LP entitled, "Soul Station." Additional players on the LP are Art Blakey, Wynton Kelly, and Paul Chambers. This is on the Blue Note label BLP-4031 and it is pressed in fabulous MONO. This is the original first pressing of this classic LP!! Both labels have the 47 West 63rd Street address and are deep-grooved. This also has the "RVG" stampers and "EAR" marks in the trailoff on both sides. Record is pressed on very thick, rigid vinyl. Both the vinyl and cover are a solid VG+. The vinyl has all of its original gloss and shine and looks rarely played. Just a couple extremely faint spindle swirls on both label; I had to look under bright light to even see them. Now, I played this LP twice. The first time I played it with my fine-line, Ortofon "audiophile" stylus (tracked at 1.5 grams) and it did skip a couple times on each side. Then, I played it again a second time with my regular, "industry-standard" Stanton stylus (tracked at 1.5 grams also) and it did not skip and all. In fact, there were just a couple subtle pops on each side. Quite frankly, I thought the LP sounded better with the Stanton stylus; the sound was much fuller and louder!! I've found that these older, thicker LPs tend to sound better with a slightly larger stylus anyway. I looked very closely at the vinyl under bright light and I cannot see any type of flaw that would be causing it to skip at all; it may just be the quality of the pressing. I just want the buyer to be aware that playback may vary slightly depending on the type of stylus used. Both sides played through very cleanly with only slightly more surface noise noticeable on side 2. The cover is sharp with no creases or seam splits. The front shows very little signs of storage wear and really displays great!! The back does show some shelf wear and slight age-spotting. There is also some fraying and paper loss to the slick along the right edge (see photo). All text is complete and unaffected. This is a well-preserved example of this scarce and classic Jazz LP!!
