The very last recording of Hank Jones!
It is only fitting that jazz giant Hank Jones' last recording was Made in Japan. The Japanese people loved him and he loved them back. He toured Japan numerous times and made many recordings for Japanese labels. This recording was made in Tokyo on February 24, less than three months before his passing on May 16, 2010.
Produced by Yasohachi "88" Itoh, who produced and released the first recording of the Great Jazz Trio with Jones, Ron Carter and Tony Williams back in 1975. This momentous album features the latest iteration of the GJT with David Wong on bass and Lee Pearson on drums. The semi-regular member of the group, tenor saxophonist Raymond McMorrion appears on two tracks. In addition, a chance meeting at Blue Note Tokyo on the day before the recording led to a special appearance by trumpeter Roy Hargrove on two tracks.
The performance is inspired throughout and everyone is given ample space to stretch out. It is astonishing -- and we are grateful for it -- that Jones played as well as ever in his final recording. It's all there in full glory -- the elegance, the beautiful and strong touch, the advanced sense of harmony and unique inflections.
The great master left one of his best recordings in the last months of his life, at age 91. His legacy lives on, and we are eternally grateful for his artistry. Thank you, Hank Jones!
Recorded in DSD by the top engineers at Sony Studios in Tokyo and mastered by Tohru Kotetsu of JVC Mastering Center, the sound quality of this LP is outstanding, even surpassing that of the excellent hybrid SACD.
May 16, 2010, the great pianist was called to heaven at 91 years of age, Hank Jones. This is the last album of The Great Jazz Trio which he led. While recording of about three months he died, we can say more Saewataru powerful performance is just a miracle.
Roy Hargrove you jump in on the last day of the Tokyo Blue Note performances hurriedly participate in the recording. And is a favorite disciple of Ron Carter of 27-year-old bassist, and David Wong, such as the powerful trio of Lee Pearson is a drummer who has gained playing experience in the Duke Ellington Orchestra, has collaborated with Horace Silver expectations of tenor player Raymond Makumorin was will support the masters. Furthermore, the piano solo styling of Hank Jones had been recorded, it became a very fulfilling listening experiences, as it was his last recording of work.
