Hal Singer & Jef Gilson: Soul of Africa - 1974 - Le chant du monde LDX 74556 - France.
Surely one of the best modern & avant garde jazz recording from France, "Soul of Africa" is the jazz meeting between the afro-american saxophonist veteran named Hall "Cornbread" Singer based in Paris since 1965 & french pianist Jef Gilson who passed 2 years in Malagasy (Africa) before to realise this Masterpiece. Jef composes two long tunes on 1st side, Hal composes three tune on 2nd side, all tunes influenced by african music featured by french talentuous drummer named "Bernard Lubat" & Malagasyan musicians from Gilson combo named "Malagasy rythm" wher you find Franck Raholison & del rabenja knwow later for their afro funk & beat works by rare groove diggers. Focus on spirit soul jazz tune named "Garvey's strut" feat fat bass opening by Jacky Samson (presents on Marco di marco works) also on spirit avant garde called "Libertarian", track "Chant Inca" offer great afro breaks & percussions part . This is the original french press extremly hard to find in excellent condition Music speaks better than words… listen to the soundclip !
