Rarity: Very Scarce: UK pressings of these lesser-known US psych bands are never easy to find with minimal sales here at the time. Not only that, it appears very little played and plays with impressive clean sound.

Brief Info: The debut H. P. Lovecraft album, and one of only two by this American psychedelic rock band, their name borrowed from the 19th horror novelist. A live set was issued many years later and is also worth checking out. I rate both their albums highly (the second is also on offer), this one blends folk with psychedelia and jazzy elements with eerie overtones borrowed from the author. Both albums are elusive as UK pressings and selling in only tiny numbers, going largely unnoticed here – quickly deleted and out-of-print. As so often, over time, their albums have gained a lot more interest. Certainly they will appeal to fans of the more acid-psych era of Jefferson Airplane with a similar sound. This a lovely mono original appearing little used. The cover is quite basically made and very prone to ageing, wear and damage. Some present here, but still a very respectable one given the fact and age. So another rare album to please many collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD(+): Quite thin and mildly flimsy, a single unlaminated format with three external flipbacks on the rear. Printed and made in England with a vintage Philips polylined inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Very prone to wear and with quite basic construction and card quality. The front has fared well overall, most of any wear is seen on the very edge of the spine fold and corner tips. Very little creasing with minimal rubbing and still clean and attractive. Lovely artwork that begs for laminate, but alas, not to be. With the main surface area showing very little wear, this is really nice and will better most seen.

Cover Back: The main back panel has little to fault at all – clean, no rubbing, or ringwear. A fairly light and quite inconpicuous crease near the bottom left corner area. The majority of covers with rear external flipbacks are laminated, this clearly wasn’t. So these have rubbed, gently scuffed in places and become grubby. Like closely related Fontana covers of this time, these were not covers in the G&L, EJD or MacNeill class, and simply do not wear well. But of course, nothing anyone can do about construction quality. Overall, a fine back which does give more clues to its considerable age, but in context, still a fine one overall.

Top Edge: Thin, straight but with moderate rubbing.

Bottom Edge: As above with the rubbing a little heavier still.

Right Edge(s), and Type: A little thickened, but still surprisingly neat with no feathering or softening of any note. Guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced, record enters here.

Spine and Text: Mostly solid with just one fine crack, thin with possible compression but still straight. Patchy surface rubbing to the white surface, but the really good news is, practically all the text is present and intact. I can imagine many of these being totally eroded.

Corners: Moderate corner wear and gentle rounding to the unforgiving fragile card.

Cover Summary: With most real wear on the edges and corners, the main areas, including the spine text, still are strong and attractive. Not for purists or the highly discerning this time, but this is a scarce vintage cover that is unforgiving and wear-prone. It will still please many collectors and I consider it a highly respective example.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: only marked down for age darkening. This vintage Polydor polylined inner has two crisp window circles and the lining clear and barely even crinkled (but loosened). All edges unsplit with no repairs. This one date-coded 106 (October 1966).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: this being critical of a mono album this considerable age. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with lovely shine and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. No penetrating stylus scratches, this record plays with lovely clean sound, it should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonderful eerie psych-folk album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a solid dynamic range and detailed sound. It has a production quite similar to the early Jefferson Airplane albums that most reading this will probably be more familiar with. Any other surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will outperform this vintage first pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels being clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and little used and carefully handled, and clearly not subjected to any blunt stylus abuse. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. Something of a ‘lost’ obscurity outside the United States, which is a shame, H. P. Lovecraft were a wonderful band and both albums I consider essential. Weighing up age and considerable delicateness, this copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
