Description

ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This beautiful and rare 2LP gatefold set from Unicef (FC – U 01/2, Italian Polygram pressing, yellow label, stereo) entitled 'Lo splendore del violino' ('The Splendour of the Violin') was issued in 1980 as a fund-raising venture and features the brilliant violinist Franco Gulli partnered by Enrica Cavallo on both harpsichord and piano in an attractive mixed program.

It's worth noting that Gulli plays a different historical violin in each work, including the following instruments: Santo Serafino – Venezia, 1740; Domenico Montagnana – Venezia, 1738; Giambattista Guadagnini – Parma, 1767; Carlo Bergonzi – Cremona, 1739; Antonio Stradivardi – Cremona, 1702; Pietro II Guarneri – Venezia, 1743.

Included are the following works:

Johann Sebastian Bach: Chaconne, from the Partita No. 2 in D minor for Unaccompanied Violin BWV 1004

Arcangelo Corelli: Sonata in D Major Op. 5 No. 1

Antonio Vivaldi: Sonata in D Major No. 6 F. XIII

Jean-Marie Leclair: Aria – Allegro – Prestissimo

Pietro Antonio Locatelli: Sonata da camera in D minor Op. 6 No. 12

Niccolo Paganini: Sonata in E minor Op. 3 No. 6

Antonin Dvorak: Four Romantic Pieces Op. 75 B. 150

Ernö von Dohnányi: Andante rubato all zingaresca

Ernest Bloch: Baal Shem: Vidui – Nigun – Simshas Torah

Karol Szymanowski (arr. Paul Kochanski): Roxana's Song, from King Roger Op. 46

Christoph Willbald Gluck (Arr. Fritz Kreisler): Melodie, from Orfeo ed Euridice

Gulli has recorded far too little given the stature of his playing. This is among his finest studio forays, and for all those who care about the art of the violin, this remarkable album will prove a wonderful fine, as much for the playing as for the instruments and music.

This remarkable album was recorded in Milano in 1980 (producer: Thomas Callia). The cover design was executed by Monique Raes. There are fine liner notes (uncredited) on the interio panels of the gatefold jacket, printed in Italian only. In addition, the gatefold album includes striking photos of Gulli and Cavallo.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD+. There is mild discoloration along the spine and in the interior panels, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, a very good collector’s copy.

The condition of the 2 LP is near-MINT throughout and playback is superb in both – overall, these rate as truly fine collector's copies.

USA Buyers: shipping delays from Spain (where I am) to the USA are extreme due to the current situation.
I apologize for the inconvenience, but I am advising USA buyers not to purchase from me at this time. Commercial shipping (e.g., UPS, DHL) is a possibility, but these are quite expensive and any such costs must be borne entirely by the buyer.
Please write with any questions, I will be happy to help.  - Posted 19 May 2020
