Description
ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful 5LP box set – a superlative collector’s copy – from Philips (412 794-1, Dutch pressing, silver/red labels, stereo, booklet included) features Friedrich Gulda’s absolutely mesmerizing traversal of the 48 Preludes & Fugues comprising Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier Books I (BWV 846-869) & II (BWV 870-893), recorded at MPS-Tonstudio, Villingen, Germany in April 1972 (Book I) and May 1973 (Book II).
This is the very same cycle that BASF/MPS first issued on LP, but it sounds much warmer here, Gulda's beautiful Steinway piano well captured by the superb engineering. A true keyboard maverick, Gulda distills his own very special brand of magic on these remarkable pieces and one senes a powerful mind behind the nimble fingers. Perhaps it will never serve as a reference set, but for the Bach connoisseur or pianophile, Gulda's 48 will prove revelatory and musically rewarding from first to last.
Incuded is a handsome full-size, 20-page, heavy-paper booklet with extensive notes on the music by Peter Schinnerling, as well as a brief and memorable introduction by Friedrich Gulda himself – all texts are provided in German, English, and French.
Incidentally, the striking cover photo fo Gulda was taken by Pim Westerweel.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the box is near-MINT. Really, there are no flaws to speak of and the box appears as new, with a beautiful glossy finish to it. There are no corner breaks, seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the box remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, this rates as a very handsome collector's copy.
The condition of the full-size, heavy-paper, 20-page booklet is similarly near-MINT. There are no creases, tears, owners’ markings, or other flaws. The pages remain bright and crisp, the binding perfect.
The condition of the 5 LPs is near-MINT throughout and in all 5 playback is superb – overall, these rate as truly fine collector's copies.
