Very rare MINT 1972 UK FIRST PRESSING 8-track LP, with A1U/B1U matrices, housed in a stunning fold-out gatefold sleeve designed like a cartoon comic book drawn by Marvel's Neal Adams. The album also saw the band introducing Mellotron to their sound. The gatefold picture sleeve and inner sleeve are both in EXCELLENT condition and the vinyl looks – and sounds – MINT. A stunning copy of this blues-rock masterpiece!

This is the extremely rare real thing: a genuine Mint/EX condition UK first pressing. The record, cover and inner sleeve are all in superb condition, without any obvious defects like scratches, tears, creases, stickers, writing, dog ears, and the like. The only thing preventing the cover getting a Mint grading is the usual slight discolouration of the spine that you would expect after forty-odd years. See pics. All items are the genuine originals bought together by me in 1972 not reprints or replacements. The LP is the original UK 1972 stereo LP, which was only played once or twice on top-end audiophile equipment and lovingly cared for.

Who Will Save The World? The Mighty Groundhogs was the fifth Groundhogs album released on Liberty/United Artists and it concluded the run of the classic trio comprising Tony McPhee, Pete Cruickshank and Ken Pustelnik (Pustelnik left several months after its early ‘72 release) and it was every inch a classic. Following in the established Groundhogs tradition of aggressive, rough-hewn playing that nevertheless flowed evenly into a welter of swiftly executed time signatures zigzagging against the speed of sound, or then dropping off entirely as though seeking to disrupt the tempo only never does but kept the beat all at the same time, “Who Will Save The World?” was guided by the splintery SG Gibson guitar playing and songwriting of Tony (T.S.) McPhee.
Just as their previous album “Split” had focused on the psychological ills of the times so did “Who Will Save The World?” set about tackling the major problems facing the world under the guise of comic book super heroes whose abilities to vanquish overpopulation, war, pollution and other such sundry blights on humanity were only matched by their collective musical prowess. It says so when you flip over to the back cover and read the comic panels inked by no one less an artist than ‘The Nefarious’ Neal Adams of DC Comics and Marvel fame.

If you have never heard any Groundhogs before; this is the first album I heard and I've been a lifelong fan ever since. They took electric blues to a totally different realm. Mixed a little electronics with it which at the time was considered blasphemous, but that was what I loved and still love about them. If you're familiar with John Lee Hooker, you should know that The Groundhogs used to be his backing band whenever he toured Great Britain. Tony (T.S.) McPhee is one of the greatest guitarists to strap on a six-string. Whether acoustic or electric... he's a master. He used a Mellotron to bring the blues to a whole different level. Not the Moody Blues for sure. Any Groundhogs album is an awesome experience... buy them all. All are worth owning.
