Description
...and finally, One from the Vault?
Beyond rare...
Grateful Dead: "The Workingman?s Dead" stereo Lp.
1st Japan pressing, 1970 on deep red see through vinyl.
White Label Promotional copy!
Warner Brothers ?W-7? Label: BP-80022
Back cover is upside down, same as the original U.S. first issue!
Whole package is in ?like new? condition!
Notes: This album was released at a transitional period, when Warner Brothers? catalog was being acquired by (or merging with?) Pioneer in Japan to be issued on the Warner-Pioneer label (late 1970 to early 1971). To the best of my knowledge, this album was never officially released on Warner Brothers on red wax, I have never seen or heard of a ?stock copy?. This album was then released by Warner-Pioneer (catalog number P-8096W) in 1971, so the only copies in existence on red wax with the ?W-7? Warner Bros. Label should be promotional copies and test pressings.
This promotional example was originally owned by Japanese music journalist (a Jazz reviewer, no idea how this ended up in his collection, he never played it!). I have never seen another example (stock, promotional or test pressing). Just this one. It has been in my collection for years.
Please see details below.
Ridiculously low starting bid, NO RESERVE Auction!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once every year or two I offer a few records for sale from my collection that for various reasons just rarely or never get played. Some are duplicates, but are so hard to find that I couldn't pass them up when I found them, others were experiments (Nat King Cole's Greatest Hits DCC double Lp is a good example, it sounded fantastic but it's not really my musical 'genre'), etc.
The majority of my record purchases are from professional online record dealers, and anyone reading this auction listing probably knows and buys from many of the same people. That can be a fairly expensive way to buy records (there are not too many bargains to be had that way), but one can develop a great deal of confidence in the grading of various sellers over time. I would rather pay a little more to get a top quality example from a reliable source instead of buying multiple copies at lesser prices before finding the "right" one.
Please take a moment to check my eBay history, I have been selling high quality vinyl record Lp's off and on since October of 2000. It won't take long to check my feedback, I only have 399 total eBay transactions, all 100% positive. The large majority of my eBay feedback is from record Lp transactions (as both a buyer and a seller).
Offered For Sale:
Grateful Dead: "The Workingman?s Dead" Lp.
TRUE 1st Japan pressing, 1970 on Red Wax.
Warner Bros. ?W-7? promo Label: BP-80022
Inner Sleeve Condition
Original plain white flip-top poly-lined paper inner sleeve in like-new condition, no seam splits, tears or writing, no yellowing, as close to new as it could be, M-
Cover Condition
The only example I?ve ever seen, if they got to the point of manufacturing these high-quality heavy cardboard glossy covers, why haven?t any of these been seen? I have never seen one on eBay, or anywhere else. The back cover is upside down, just as the original U.S. covers were, the Japanese Warner Bros. Label number is prominently featured on the front upper-right hand corner. Incredible condition, obviously preserved as a special item since it was made. Could not be nicer, no seam splits, no writing, no problems. All spine text is completely and easily readable.
Has a circled ?H? and ?Â¥ 2,000? yen price on the back cover at the bottom.
Even if a similar example exists, I don't think it could not be nicer than this one, and combined with the rarity, should easily be considered a ?World Class? Grateful Dead collectable.
Record Condition
This record is in near mint (M-) condition. Beautiful bright white unmarked labels. NO SPINDLE MARKS on the label of Side 1, and just ONE tiny spindle mark on the label of Side 2, right next to the spindle hole and very difficult to see against the white background, even when held at an angle to bright light.
NO marks of ANY kind on the vinyl when examined under a bright light. Yes, I played it once (you would have too!), it plays as good as it looks. A one-of-a-kind collectable, promotional issue on RED vinyl, by the Grateful Dead, of one of their most loved albums, in true NEAR MINT condition.
Lots of things are called ?RARE? on eBay. Some are, and some aren?t. This is the rarest item I have ever offered.
Album was stored in a heavy outer plastic protective cover when I purchased it, and has been stored the same way ever since (inside my Rolling Stones MFSL box, actually!).
Notes: This album is considered by many as one of the 3 best Grateful Dead albums, hugely popular, and even the Warner-Pioneer reissue on Japanese virgin vinyl is hard to locate in my experience. This red wax promotional copy on the Warner Bros. ?W-7? label is not just rare, it may be the only known example (it?s certainly the only one I?m aware of?)
36 years old now...
?and a required album for the serious Grateful Dead fan. This is a top condition example, and the ONLY example I have ever seen. It is the only one I have, and when it?s gone, there are no others, so if you?re interested, now is the time...
A once in a lifetime offering?
I do not use eBay's "Check Out" service, so please wait for me to contact you after the auction is complete.
Packaging:
You will see from my eBay feedback that I package very securely. Records are removed from jackets to prevent seam-splits, records and covers are placed inside re-sealable plastic outer protective covers, and "sandwiched" between two pieces of cardboard cut to a size larger than the album cover in order to protect the cover from corner-dings during shipping.
I have not had any problems with damaged records as a result of my own packaging, but I do recommend Insurance on the more expensive items, I cannot be held responsible for what happens to the package after it leaves my possession.
Shipping to the U.S.
Priority shipping for a package weighing anywhere from 2lbs. to 3lbs. is $5.00 to $9.00 depending on your location. I do not charge a "Handling" fee, shipping calculations will be made using the USPS website (http://postcalc.usps.gov/) based on your Zip code.
Payment for U.S. Buyers:
Money Orders are preferred (no checks). Paypal is fine. I do not use eBay's "Check Out" service, so please wait for me to contact you after the auction is complete. Once I have the winning bidder's address information I will calculate exact shipping using the USPS website (http://postcalc.usps.gov/) and send you a total including Insurance and Priority Shipping to your destination.
International Shipping:
I have made many friends and many new record buying contacts around the world through these auctions, it is my pleasure to make these records available to everyone who loves music and who is interested in purchasing quality record Lp's. I have plenty of experience shipping record Lp's internationally. Once I have the winning bidder's address information, I will calculate exact shipping using the USPS website (http://postcalc.usps.gov/)
Payment for International Buyers:
For Buyers from outside the U.S., please use Paypal, and please pay in U.S. dollars. Once I have your address, I will send you a total including Insurance and Airmail Shipping to your destination.
From my previous international shipping experience, I understand that some people prefer to go without Insurance and would like a low "Declared Value" to avoid import duties/taxes. That's fine, but at your own risk, I cannot be responsible for what happens to the package after it leaves my possession.
I think that covers everything, I will try to have some other interesting/rare classic rock era vinyl posted here over the next few days, as time allows. There will be some UK pressings (top condition original UK Decca unboxed mono Export versions of the Rolling Stones "Out of Our Heads" and ?12 x 5? Lp?s that I may part with), maybe a few U.S. first issues, several high quality Japanese pressings (including the red vinyl mono Beatles EP box set, some White label promos and some red wax first pressings), and some Classic Records first issues (the 180g releases). Maybe even a couple of my DCC 180g Lp's. Hopefully, something interesting for everyone.
Any winning bidder is welcome to combine multiple items to save on shipping.
Thanks very much for looking, if you have any questions or comments please feel free to contact me, I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Scott
