Description
ACETATE of Grateful Dead's 1980 album "Go To Heaven".
This is an extremely rare acetate of this album with STERLING SOUND, INC. labels noting songs and date of the cut (3/31/80). It is what would have been used to create the master disc used to stamp the first pressing of the album if this was the final acetate. "Feel Like A Stranger" cuts off at very end of jam so this is most definitely an earlier cut of the LP. Based on the cut in "Feel Like A Stranger" at end of album side, it is likely that another acetate was made after this where Feel Like A Stranger does not cut off. It is possible that this earlier acetate could contain additional music or earlier mixes than the released version but I can not confirm since Alabama Getaway is the only studio song from this album I am familiar with. That song sounded the same to me but not sure on other songs. I think it's likely that Feel Like A Stranger may be longer since it cuts off towards end jam, but again just my guess.
The sonics on this acetate are incredible and the album has the most silent background I have ever heard on LP. It is basically pitch black quiet if you have a decent setup. This acetate is made with a glass core covered with a nitrocellulose lacquer coating. It looks like a normal record but it feels heavy and rigid, almost like a slab of glass. This is highest possible quality for this album...beyond what was on the first copy of the first pressing! It was Sterling Studio's master before the master stamper!
Condition:
At the beginning of SIDE ONE there is an area in on record (see photos) with some smudge-type marks and a small group of light scratches, including one short one that can be felt with fingernail in very beginning of grooves. I played this section and there is a "tick" for only about 2-3 revolutions at the very beginning of Alabama Getaway that disappears after that. The attached photo exaggerates what can be seen by human eye and the long scratch shown does not affect playback or create an audible sound. The smudge-type marks in that area also do not affect playback or sound. There are 2-3 other VERY insignificant marks elsewhere on record that can only be seen under bright light that have zero affect on playback or sound. The record is shiny and beautiful. You won't believe how quiet it is except as noted at very beginning of one side for 2-3 revolutions.
Please note that I recall that the 2-3 audible "ticks" were at the very beginning of Alabama Getaway but I see in my photos that the marks are on what is labeled as Side 2 of the album so it is possible that the labels may be reversed for Sides 1 and 2. I did not play album a second time to confirm. However, I can confirm that the album contains a Side 1 and Side 2 with all the songs listed as labeled. You may be only the second person to have played this album since it left the studio.
