Hello. For your consideration is this brand new factory sealed Grateful Dead Dick’s Picks Volume 3 Vinyl Box Set. It is a limited edition of 2000 box sets. They are hand numbered, but this one is not, as it was part of just a handful of extra copies, to send to people who received a damaged set from going through the mail...or even never received it, due to it being lost in the mail. The orders went well with Brookvale on this Volume 3, and so the extra handful where allowed to be sold to folks who missed out on ordering one before they sold out. This set is brand new and factory sealed. There is one spot on the bottom front edge, where there is a tiny catch in the cellophane, and under it, is a tiny scratch on the edge of the cover box (see photo 8). Other than this cosmetic-only nothing of a tiny scratch, this set is mint. Grateful Dead Dick’s Picks Volume 3 is a hard one to find. They do not come up for sale often at all, and never still sealed! This is live Grateful Dead at the Sportatorium in Pembroke Pines FL on 5/22/77. Yep, May 1977! These vinyl sets are remasters too, remastered just for this vinyl box set. If you are looking at this listing, I’m sure this is obvious too you. Around the edges of the box set it looks as if it is worn. This is printed this way on purpose to give it the look of the original boxes that held each recording reel. Very cool!

Grateful Dead Dick's Picks Volume 3 180-gram four LP box set

May 1977 performance among the finest in all of Dead lore: Few, if any, better tours staged by this legendary group

Artwork, packaging and mastering all approved by the band

The year was 1977. As Grateful Dead touring goes, it's vintage, up there with '72 and '74. And there are few better examples of the band seizing its colossal live potential than what's on this May '77 gem, sparkling with exercises in folk, jazz, blues, rock, psychedelia, and funk. Want to know why the group has such a crazed following? Get this show, on superb-sounding vinyl, and prepare to be transformed.

Anchored by Jerry Garcia's majestic guitar playing, the Dead also benefit from the presence of husband-and-wife team Donna Jean and Keith Godchaux on vocals and keyboards, respectively. Fans prize this show not only for the cosmic passages and imaginative sequences but for the risk. Perfection isn't prized here. Instead, there's a feeling of adventure, the sense of a group of immensely talented musicians truly collaborating and operating at an otherworldly level.

Featuring definitive live takes on such concert favorites as "The Music Never Stopped," "Sugaree," "Franklin's Tower," "Estimated Prophet," "Eyes of the World" and "Terrapin Station," as well as a beloved "Supplication" and "Lazy Lightning" tandem, this is a show no casual or diehard listener should be without.

Manufacturing Notes:

When manufacturing the Dick's Picks for vinyl, Brookvale had some things to really consider. With the time limitations on vinyl sides they did their best to preserve the jams the band is famous for and make the vinyl flow as best as possible. Vol. 3 was culled from a Grateful Dead performance in Pembroke Pines, Florida on May 22, 1977, and is presented here as a 4 x 180-gram LP 12" x 12" box set with all records housed in high quality poly lined sleeves. The set will be limited to only 2,000 hand numbered units! Side 2 of the fourth LP is blank.

Engineer Jeffrey Norman on mastering Vols. 3 & 4:

"I was excited to get the chance to remaster the early Dick's Picks' releases for vinyl...they were originally mastered for CD in 1995-96, and I was looking forward to hearing the 1/4? source tapes once again, 17 years later. What I didn't expect was the dramatic improvement the new mastering gives to these classic releases. The original CD resolution is 44.1KHz/16bit (as is any released CD), while the mastering I am now doing for the vinyl releases is 96KHz/24bit. I'm now using a state-of-the-art analog to digital converter (Pacific Microsonics Model 2)....and I've probably gotten better at doing this over the years! I used the original CDs as a guide for the new mastering, but when listening to the CDs I feel like I'm listening in black and white, while the new mastering feels like I'm listening in color. It's very exciting!

"A few observations: the mixes for Dick's Picks Vol. 3 and Vol. 4 couldn't be more different. The Pembroke Pine show (Vol.3) is quite bass strong and powerful. The Fillmore East show (2/13-14/12) on the other hand is very bright and a little bass shy. Both represent the ears and interpretations of the mixers at the time (Betty Cantor Jackson at Pembroke Pines, and Bear at the Fillmore East), and both capture the quality and excitement of these shows. I did some equalization on both shows to enhance the presentation but kept true to what the original mixers intended. As typical of all Grateful Dead shows, both these two shows are very dynamic....there's a wide range of volume from quiet to very loud. I tried to keep the dynamics intact, with very little limiting, using limiting mainly as protection against digital overs.

"In choosing the songs for each side of vinyl, the goal was to be true to the flow of the show and keep the fidelity as high as possible. There is a physical limitation to the length of a vinyl side.if it gets too long there is a loss of bass and level. Ideally the sides would be no longer than 20 minutes, and for the most part that was accomplished. However there are a few sides that are longer than ideal, but because of the way the music lays out there was no way around a few longer lengths. Also because of those side length constraints, there are some songs that had to be split in two (i.e. Vol.4 Dark Star, The Other One, and Lovelight)...sorry, you're going to have to flip the record to get the entire "good stuff".

"Considering that these tapes are 40 years old (in the case of Vol. 4, Fillmore East), they sound phenomenal! There are some issues on the original recording that can't be fixed (i.e.. L/R movement side to side in Vol. 3 Eyes of the World), but that in no way takes away from this great music."
