Vinyl Condition:
Track-by-Track Play Grade: "Timepiece": Strong VG+ "Lover Man": G+ (locked groove) Rest of record: strong VG (pops and clicks in quieter passages) No distortion from groove wear on entire record (playback with a Shure M44-7 conical stylus tracking at 3 grams)
Jacket Condition: Strong VG (3" split bottom right; top seam and spine in tact; no handwriting)
Rare original 1953 mono pressing with deep grooves, Lexington Ave address, flat edge, framed cover, and Plastylite "P" (ear) etched in dead wax. This album is a very early recording of Rudy Van Gelder's and in all likelihood was mastered by him despite his initials not being present in the dead wax. Fred Cohen's Blue Note guide explains that "RVG" does not appear in the dead wax until catalog number 5043 so rest assured, this is an original pressing.
Despite this being an earlier recording of Van Gelder's, this recording is not drenched in the "spring reverb" that plagues many of his early recordings and thus stands out as a shining example of his talents from the very beginning of his professional recording career.
