AllMusic Review by Eugene Chadbourne
What an unusual item. This typical Starday mishmash of items from the recording archive originally came with what was advertised as a 32-page color songbook with words and music as well as pictures and stories about the songs. This may have not been a large edition, and used record store hounds have to face the unfortunate possibility that this treasured booklet might be long gone by the time a copy of this side makes it their way. Deluxe souvenir book aside, this collection of Jones material is goofier than usual, and will definitely appeal to fans of Jones' old buddy Roger Miller for this reason. Two songs that Jones and Miller wrote together are featured. One of them, "Tall Tall Trees," is often picked as one of Jones' best recordings. The song selection also includes a larger percentage of original Jones material than normal for one of his albums and he seems to be under something of a Miller influence, although there is a little bit more of a honky tonky, near rockabilly feel to some of the material. There are Miller-ish, clever turns of phrase but there is also Jones' own "Window Up Above," one of the great country ballad recordings. Inexplicably, two tracks are given over to fairly lame instrumentals. The liner note claims these numbers are "performed...in the western swing dance style that George Jones uses on his personal appearances" -- which fortunately for Jones' career was a lie
