Some folk bought vinyl and never played it. Keeping it hermetically sealed like a rare treasure. For these you will pay high prices and there are not many available.

The rest of of bought it for its intended purposed: to be played and enjoyed and as a soundtrack to our lives.

Some of my records got played a lot and some not much at all. Some were bought new and some second, third or fourth hand. I'm moving on my collection to the next keeper of the flame.

We are 50 years too late for this LP to sound like a CD

Expect some background crackle, and check my audio review to see how much. 

I'm listening through studio headphones, played back on a Thorens deck with a heavier stylus setting. I've given the vinyl a quick hand clean with L'Art Du Son Cleaner, and I alway recommend further cleaning as I haven't played this for a long time. Bare in mind that sound reproduction varies from system to system. I will tell you how I hear it. Remember that you  can return the item if you find it unsatisfactory. And please get in touch before rushing ahead to leave bad feedback, you won't lose out so keep calm and get in touch, I aim to please.

A pair of decent sounding records that there is very little fault with. It doesn’t sound to have been played much and well worth the time I spent cleaning it up. My detailed description is below.

S1 EX

Ok, let’s see. Nice warm sounding recording, not a super loud mix. Light crackle just at the start of track one that soon leaves. No distortion or deterioration to the top or bottom end frequencies. Sounded fine. Pretty quiet between tracks! My sweet lord is the one track in this boxed set that you often found worn out. Not here! There were no issues at all, no crackle, pops or distortion. Nice keys on track three’s intro. Good to hear George rocking out. All sound crisp and clear. I think I hear some crackle at the start of Isn’t it a pity, but I am not sure because it is so low. Nice to hear the way he incorporates homage to Hey Jude at the end of this lovely sounding track, no issues.

That was a really good sounding side with no problems at all. Grades EX

S2 VG+

What is life kicks off this side. More classic Harrison. The audio is fine, some low crackle at the start, and a couple of low, low pops midway. No distortion. The stereo guitar riffing just over midway sound good in the headphones. The string section is crystal clear. If not for you is sounding big and warm. Nice background noise free intro to Behind that locked door. I’m even hearing the background percussion in Let it down and it’s mixed way back, and this is one of the tracks where the bass is more prominent. No breaking up of high frequencies when song crescendos. Perfect, that ended an extremely decent sounding side. I’m grading this as very good plus because of the pop at the start. 

S5 EX

Off to a good sounding start. This is the jam lp part of the boxed set. Tight groove by these top musicians. Bobby Keys on sax, Gary Wright on organ et al.   I heard one thin pop midway. Good fidelity , no distortion when things peak. It’s Johnnie’s birthday played fine. Eric Clapton features again on the last track Plug me in. There has been decent bass on this album. Brilliant! No issues of merit on this side. It grades as excellent.

S6 VG+

Slithering into the last side to review. Intro was fine and crackle free, as most of the set has been. I’m listening out for any of the marks on this side. This track, I remember Jeep is credited as having the mighty Ginger Baker on drums and Billy Preston on organ. This lp is just George sharing his having fun with his talented mates. First track sounded fine. Bobby Whitlock’s piano playing on track two sounds great. Wow, and then that was that. I found no audio issues on this side. I’m grading it as very good plus

VINYL CONDITION

S1 VG-

The surface looks pretty good generally, and appears cared for. There are superficial marks and a few 1.5 inch or less, long mild scratches. There are no heavy scratches. I’m grading this as very good minus. 

S2 VG

Nice and bright with some superficial marks. Grades Very good

S5  VG-

Much like side one. Grades as very good minus

S6 G+

Nice glossy side like the others. Superficial mars, mild scuffs and three small clusters of very short fine marks side by side. Grades as good plus. 

I’ll be listening out for any of these marks during playback and reporting back.  

SLEEVE CONDITION 

GOOD

Structurally pretty robust only with two split corners. Lid is separate from the box. Sticker marks and staining present front top left. 

The inners have splits and taped up edges. They grade poor.

Grading guidelines

Sleeve / Inners

May have one or more of these things:

Mint – Like new

Excellent – Some, but very little wear. No handwriting, no rips, no splits. 

Very Good – Still decent. More wear like rubbed edges, more pronounced rubbed corners, maybe little tears, might be a sticker, or name written on it. 

Good – Very rubbed corners, larger tears, handwriting, stickers, sticker peel. Water damage.

Vinyl visual grades

May have one or more of these things:

Mint – Looks like a new record

Just bought it new in a shop

Excellent – Almost looks like new, some marks but no very many and they will be superficial not hard.

Been cared for and picked up non serious marks

Very good – Still looks decent may have mild scratches, and more superficial marks.

Been looked after but obviously played and enjoyed, picking up marks along the way.

Good – Has one or more hard scratch, lots of surface marks. Surface stains. Looked after but had an accident or two, may be generally uncared for. 

Audio Grades

May have one or more of these things:

Mint – Sounds like a new record

No issues sounds like I just got it home from the shop

Excellent – Really good audio, no deterioration of the sound quality. No loud background noise. Maybe one or two or no low pops. No skipping oro repeated clicks.

Sounds decent and close to new.

Very good – A very playable copy with enjoyable fidelity that hasn’t deteriorated much if at all. No distortion in the bass, middle or high frequencies. Plays without skipping. Soft background noise will be noticeable but not intolerable. Maybe a pop or two and a mild level. Still no skipping or repeated clicks.

A copy to be played an enjoyed on consumer hifi.

Good – Playable but with more than one issue. This could be a brand new record with one hard scratch. Could be a record that has been kept out side its sleeve. Some skipping, maybe pops and repeated clicks. Back ground noise will be competing with the level of the music. Grooves sound worn and there maybe distortion of top frequencies. .

Probably a rare record that you are buying as an artifact rather than a playing copy.
