Nursery Cryme is the first Genesis album with Steve Hackett and Phil Collins in the line-up, although some songs on the album, such as The Musical Box, were created when the band was playing with a line-up of four, after the departure of guitarist Ant Phillips. The change of drummer and guitarist produced a much sharper sound compared to the Trespass album and heralded a style that was developed in the following years. The group's instruments were also enriched with the Melotron Mk.II, purchased from the King Crimson band, which in the works of Seven Stones and The Fountain of Salmacis imitates the symphonic sound of string and wind instruments.
The album is kept in a Victorian style in terms of content and image - the cover of the album created by Paul Whitehead has a 19th-century character and evokes the spirit of the school in Charterhouse, where the band members grew up. The lyrics are as mysterious as dark, embellished with black humor, macabre, mythological motifs, ridiculing the hypocrisy and puritanism of Victorian England.
