VINYL: NM ~This very glossy vinyl may never have been played before I put it on the turntable to check the sound. There are a very few, extremely hard to see surface hairlines; probably from the inner sleeve. It sounds bright, clear and very clean. No background noise that I could find. The "Columbia Records Productions" (from the fabled Santa Maria pressing plant) labels are clean and bright with no wear.

"Gene Clark" and "2 Sides To Every Story" is hand-written in on one label. The other side is blank.

I'm not sure of the ACTUAL date of this pressing, though it certainly pre-dates the official release date of thr official RSO commercial album later in 1977. (the sticker on front cover has "2/16/77", so that is the probable date of press.) Whether Clark had hoped to be re-signed by his old label, Columbia, or whether the Santa Maria plant was merely used to produce the test pressing, I can't be sure. I got this and some other great record industry rarities from someone retired out of the business and he couldn't tell me for sure, though most of what else I got from him was 1960's - 1970's Columbia product. The sticker also states: "122 advance copies". Whether that is an actual pressing-run number or means something else, I can't say; though that seems the most likely explanation for that line.

STRICT, CONSERVATIVE GOLDMINE Ratings

Musicians backing Gene on this album include Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, alumnus of Steely Dan and a member of the Doobie Brothers at the time, playing guitar; three old friends also contributed: banjo player Doug Dillard , fiddler Byron Berline , and steelie Al Perkins. Emmylou Harris added backing vocals to two tracks as well. Dixie Flyers' Mike Utley and Jerry McGee from the No Other team were on board also. They brought their bandmate, drummer Sammy Creason. Jim Fielder, formerly of the early Mothers of Invention and the latter-day Buffalo Springfield, played bass.

Two Sides was Gene Clark's last solo album for a major label. Signed to RSO Records shortly after his experimental and engaging 1974 Elektra album, No Other, which is often cited as his masterpiece, Clark and producer Thomas Jefferson Kaye finally released this. Two Sides is a much lower-key affair, though it succeeds on many more levels than the more heralded No Other. Clark's explorations into country music are much more at home on this album, as tracks such as "Mary Lou" and "Kansas City Southern" demonstrate. Oddly, one of the highlights of this record is a non-Clark composition, the traditional "In the Pines," which showcases Clark's brilliant (and underrated) vocal ability. The following year would see Clark team up with ex-Byrd mates Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman on the forgettable McGuinn, Clark & Hillman project. Two Sides shows Clark in full command of his awesome gifts. Essential for Gene Clark enthusiasts.
