Label/Format: Straight – Rare original UK deep magenta red format.
Label and Condition: Apart from a small pull mark on side two, both would be immaculate. In terms of spindle marks, there are none and knowing the source of this copy, it was possibly unplayed. The tiny pull blemish does not have sticker marks and could have actually been a manufacture blemish. Still magnificent examples of this scarce highly collectable label that always specialised in all things bizarre, original and alternative - as you would expect from its founder, the great Frank Zappa who also produces and plays tambourine on the final song. This elusive UK pressing has wonderful sound and most will rarely compare to this. You can imagine this was a record bought by a very few and of certain types, suffice to say not really hi-fi buffs. This maybe the copy you have been waiting for - this has been long out-of-print on CD.
Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.
Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.
Weight of this Record: 140 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.
Country of Manufacture: England.
Rarity: Rare, make no mistake about that, most that surface are US copies. UK examples are incredibly hard to find and never included the book which is unique to the original US pressing. Thus I have included a book repro taken from a US copy. This ultra rare insert is essential as the text, with lyrics, explains what the songs are all about and includes a forward by Frank Zappa, who also appears, along with several members of the Mothers of Invention and produces. Some interesting photos too – I guess many collectors have never seen this at all. Not only that I also include FREE the CD of Pamela des Barres ‘Confession of a Groupie’ where the lady herself reads her book. It gives fascinating insights into the crazy world of The GTO’s and all the bizarre madness of those heady times - the perfect accompaniment to for this wonderful album. I really think I am spoiling the winning bidder here!
Original Year of Release: 1969
Matrix Nos: STS 1059-A1 / STS 1059-B1 [these are exactly the same as the US version].
Brief Artist & Album Info: In my opinion, the most essential of the Zappa related artists album to own – it’s a magnificent, if a little too short album, indeed my only criticism - you won’t want this one to end. One of the rarest UK albums on Frank Zappa’s Straight label, this would have probably sold only a handful of copies back in the late 1960s. As stated earlier, Zappa produces and appears, along with Jeff Beck, early Mothers: Jimmy Carl Black; Roy Estrada; Ian Underwood and Don Preston. An amazing collection of original psych songs with really surreal moments - some very catchy and they quickly get lodged into the subconscious – mixed with groupie culture dialogue - check out the songs titles above to get some idea of what to expect. The dialogue is at times very amusing, young sweaty schoolgirls encountering a ‘dyke’ gym-teacher. A guy asks how much to j*** off when viewing the ladies in stockings - I think you get the picture - outrageous by name and by nature – it’s real case of “They Don’t Make ’em Like That Anymore’’. So who were the GTO’s? An all-female group, initially known as the Laurel Canyon Ballet Company, alongside the notorious Plaster Casters (with reference on this album and disc), the best-known members of the 60s groupie sub-culture. After a time each member abandoned her respective surname and became Miss Lucy, Miss Pamela, Miss Christine (died 5 November 1972, appeared on the cover of Zappa’s masterpiece Hot Rats), Miss Sparky, Miss Mercy, Miss Sandra (heavily pregnant when this cover was made) and Miss Cinderella. The septet then moved to Zappa’s home when Miss Christine became governess to his daughter Moon Unit and they occasionally performed live with the Mothers of Invention. Zappa produced the bulk of this album and Lowell George (Mothers and Little Feat) was credited to two tracks. The album almost never made release at all when Misses Mercy, Cynderella and Sparky were arrested on drug related charges. The seven disbanded soon after and went their own ways. This album is very obviously rare, the UK version especially so, most early albums on Straight are - few had any commercial potential and this is no exception. The UK’s omission of the book was very bad news: it’s truly essential so I had to include it even though not original. This is ‘music’ from a bygone crazy era and totally unique. This copy on offer includes a superb, wonderful playing record, it was possibly unplayed. The cover is way better than average with an attractive front, middle AND Back, it’s never easy to find even EX, no protection makes this one highly prone to wear because of the deep rich colouring and thick record inside. I had yet to find an example with no ringwear on the back, but hey - HERE WE ARE! Whereas most sellers fail to even show all four ‘pages’, I dare to go in real close to show these bizarre ladies and prove the lack of wear to the four main surfaces. For any collector of the weird, strange and truly bizarre, but above all else – unique – without doubt, one of the best examples you will ever see or hear. The CD is the icing on the cake, remember this is a FREEBIE for the winning bidder. A very rare opportunity indeed to explore the wonderful world of the GTO’s.
Cover’s Potential for Wear & Damage: Very high and near impossible to find with little or none. Both US and UK covers are equally vulnerable with ringwear and rubbing rife on most. I have yet to find either with none and this example is certainly the best original UK E .J. Day version I have ever seen with in real terms minimal overall wear.
Cover Condition and Details: With so little wear to the main four faces, I have no hesitation in grading this EX+, it has edge rubbing as most all will have but the lack of rubbing and especially ringwear is unusual to say the least. Often the backs will not be shown in adverts because they look to poor and tatty, but not here (and I would certainly show it even if it did). Most found are in atrocious conditions, literally falling apart with seam splits and horrendous ringwear, this is light years above all that and looks strong and attractive. It’s a non-laminated gatefold format. Printed and made in the UK by the E. J. Day Group. A very fine example of this fabulously bizarre cover, this will never be easy to find much better – it’s one of the most wear-prone sleeves I have ever encountered with ringwear being almost the norm. It should still please most collectors and those that know it, it appreciate this has far less wear than normal.
Cover Front: No (permanent) damage on this one: In fact it’s in superb condition with any light wear showing right on the very edge of the edges where a little rubbing encroaches into view (but only just). This is clean, uncreased with no ring marks or indentations. I was tempted to show this in close-up to show the faces hidden in the trees but I will let the winning bidder enjoy the fine details of this superb front. A cover issued at the peak of creativity - a totally unique cover designed by John Williams.
Cover Back: Ringwear? WHAT RINGWEAR, have you ever seen this with none? Well look again, seeing is believing. This ruthlessly uncompromising back is also superb and the deep purple ink fully intact with any rubbing minuscule. Few marks or blemishes and still retaining deep rich colour. Barely any creasing and the artwork superb - check out the close-up shot. The chilling back text was written by Miss Christine and is totally wear -free.
Cover Gatefold Inner: Magnificent and almost as made - these girls were really wierd - check out the centrefold pictures in close-up - no distance or fuzzy shots here, just look at the lack of wear to the world’s most infamous groupies. Testament to those crazy times again – Frank marketed these girls perfectly, these cover types will never be seen again and if they did, who could take them seriously when its all be done before here?
Top Edges: Light, patchy rubbing only.
Bottom Edges: Very light on the front, more moderate on back.
Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with practically no wear or feathering. Record entered on this edge.
Spine and Text: Thinner than the US version and with blue on purple ink for text, it will not be seen easily. This has some rubbing near the corners and some patchy chipping. Still solid and straight and folded square, some text has rubbed but is less significant than on most covers for the aforementioned reason.
Corners: All have rubbed in respect to their edge - moderate on the spine, less so on the others. All retain very respectable shape and actually still look very neat.
Cover Summary: A strong all round example of this very fragile original UK-made cover, one that will certainly prove very difficult to find much better - be totally assured of that - this usually is seen in very poor conditions. A wonderful, bizarre, even surreal cover that sums up these crazy chicks better than my words ever could - take one more look at them in close-up.
The ‘Book’ & CD: The UK copy of this album did NOT include the book so it is NOT incomplete without it. This repro was taken from the US original, it was never included with a UK copy which was bad news as it’s vital. It includes the song lyrics and explains the songs. It has a brief foward by Frank Zappa himself. Twelve sheets and very clearly the book you should have had. The FREE CD is Miss Pamela reading her book herself. It’s great and compliments the album perfectly (please see my cover picture).
Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: I feel most would put a Mint(-) grading on a jewel like this but I can just about detect a few ultra faint hairlines or minor paper scuff so I will reluctantly grade as EX++. An amazing Straight record and one of the very best I have ever seen. Very clean playing surfaces with excellent shine and lustre with a intense black finish. All the hallmarks of a hardly played record. Any ultra fine surface traces are purely removal marks from a less than sympathetic unlined inner. A superb example of this near extinct, ‘lost’ psych record, looking lovely and sounding the same. Is it really likely a much cleaner UK copy will ever get offered? As stated both US and UK copies are difficult enough to find, and like this, well near impossible. This record should thrill all connoisseurs of this alternative and strange entertainment.
Album Played For Grading: Of course - who would not want to play this? [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]
Sound Quality: A record that plays just as good as it looks with practically nothing unwanted. Top quality clean sound with minimal unwanted sounds, the odd mild sporadic surface trace but nothing else and this has to be best UK copy of this title I have ever heard. No distortion or sound degrading whatsoever - consider its vintage and what it could have been subjected too with pile-driver needles and very heavy weighted tone-arms. The detail from the musical tracks are superb with a real psych feel, another triumph for Zappa. Of course the appearance of the Mothers of Invention makes this an essential item for any Zappa collector - I had to wait a long time, and the arrival of Ebay to eventually get a copy for myself - no record fayre I have attended has ever had a copy for sale and would one ever show like this? A challenging recording with quiet passages and dialogue, a top pressing and lightly played record is essential for maximum pleasure – all is included here. A better copy will rarely ever be found and this UK pressing is the creme-de-la-creme copy to own.
End Piece: Without doubt one of the most original ‘one-off’ albums you will ever hear - it sums up that crazy band/groupie scene of the late 60s/early 70s perfectly. A strange, bizarre and totally off-the-wall album as you will ever wish to hear - along with An Evening With Wild Man Fischer this has to be included in any serious Zappa collection. This is also out of print on CD and prices for that are getting high too, again if you can find one. This record simply will not appear often and I can honestly state you will be very unlikely to find this actual record much better (or the cover). To conclude this advert I quote from the from the front page of the book, its a short preface written by Zappa: “The GTO’s write all their own lyrics and no subject matter covered by these lyrics was suggested by any outside source. The choice of subjects is a reflection of the girls’ own attitudes toward their environment. The GTO’s hope you like their album’’ – well I love it, and I hope the winning bidder enjoys it too. Truly original and unique, there has never been anything else quite like the GTOs - these were as outrageous as it ever got.
Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. I pride myself on offering a variety of genres to keep my site as interesting as possible. I will rarely offer any record that falls below a true Excellent grading, unless its of a certain rarity which will justify offering a lesser grade. I try, to the best of my ability to describe as accurately and as honesty as I can all items I offer for sale with all the relevant information I can think of to help any potential bidder and collector. You may notice I only submit records sparingly on Ebay - on average ONEADAY, a couple more at weekends if time permits, hence the name - time rarely allows for more as I Play-Grade virtually every record I offer in their entirety, not just bits to guess a grade - visuals alone do not always tell a true or full story. I will mention any defects or flaws no matter how small that I notice to be fair as possible to any interested collector – I am very fussy and my buyers have the right to be too. Every record I offer, whether it be a common or rare item deserves the same respect as far as I am concerned and will be treated the same - just because an item is rare does not always mean its good. I get just as much pleasure offering a relatively common record in stunning near mint condition as the real rare items. All the pictures I use for your guidance are taken with a digital camera or scanned - they are NOT improved, cleaned-up or made better looking than they are with camera trickery or enhancing with digital programmes. What you see is what you get and scanned labels will give a more accurate representation of the genuine colour than flash photography where light is variable. I cannot guarantee total accuracy for colours however but most will be very close. If any picture I take looks more flattering than the actual item for any reason, I will clearly state the fact in the advert and vice-versa. I hope the item below is to your liking - any questions can be emailed and I will do my very best to answer you. I am enthusiastic, and have a fair degree of knowledge about many genres and I promise quality items - bid with confidence - excellence comes as standard and so does Near Mint regularly. Please assume all records I offer have NO jumps, sticks, warps or writing on covers or labels unless clearly stated to the contrary. Thanks for your interest and Good luck – MIKE.
Equipment Used for Play-Grading: I now play-grade ALL the records I offer (unless clearly stated to the contrary) on the following equipment:Deck: Linn LP12 with Ittok Mk IV arm and Ortofon Samba Moving Coil cartridge (tracks at 1.8 grams). Amps: Naim Nait 5i with Project USB phono stage and Chord interconnects. Speakers: B&W 704 Floorstanding 3-way Monitors (bi-wired). All records I offer on Ebay are cleaned on a professional Moth vacuum machine before play-grading for the cleanest and best possible sound and will include a brand new lined inner and protective cover too.
First-time, zero-rated bidders, who do not ask permission to bid, will be cancelled immediately and blocked – NO exceptions. For winning bidders who I consider excessively slow to make contact or submit payment, I will use my right to block future bids. If any bidder who wins in the final seconds is present to do so, surely they can at least email me to inform of intention and payment method? If swift or promp payment is a problem, please do not bid.
POSTING & PACKING: What You Get: I now offer the fastest possible posting, mostly the very next day after payment is received or within 48 hours maximum. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT mailers) with the record(s) REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with TWO thick stiffners for even extra protection. The cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW heavy duty soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my Moth Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. Printed address labels are used for clarity and well as sender label. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. Customers requests or special needs for P&P will be respected if at all possible but NOT surface mail abroad. I never make profit on posting and offer probably the best-value and safest shipping possible. I will invoice any winning bidder as soon as possible after the auction ends, with the total costs including ‘standard’ or ‘optional extra insurance’ P&P – ALL UK and Russian packets go out non-negotiable Recorded Delivery. My ‘loss’ or ‘damage rate’ is less than 0.1 per percent based on over 4,000+ items sold in over 7 years of Ebay trading and I consider that pretty exceptional.
PLEASE NOTE: I will now only send packets to Russia with Recorded Delivery at a cost of £7 per single LP. If this is unacceptable to Russian collectors, please do not bid. I only want my records to arrive safely and this gives packets a better chance to do so. Also ALL UK packets will be sent with either Recorded or Special Delivery as standard (both have to be signed for). All shipping costs and rules can be found after my description. If they are not acceptable, please do not bid.
NOTE: First Time Bidders: I will cancel ALL first-time bidders with no feedbacks or excessive negatives who do not ask me if its OK to bid first – NO EXCEPTIONS.
Please Note: I will now offer any item to the runner-up after the mandatory Ebay 3 days if no contact is made by the winning bidder unless prior notice of any delay is given beforehand. The same applies if no payment is received within the mandatory 7 days so any bidder who has just lost out can still email me to reserve the item as priority second chance – it’s always worth asking.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE
My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
