Description
"GRETCHEN" - this auction is for two 10-inch, 33 rpm, metal test pressings of lsd-inspired acid archives type psychedelic fuzz rock music from 1968. These came from the estate of a New York City area disk jockey. One of the records has music on both sides, while one has music on one side only. There are eleven songs. This also comes with an original three-page stapled, typewritten promotional from the group, Gretchen, which itself also seems written by someone influenced by lsd, and which is dated January 1968.
The songs seem somewhat primitive and were likely never released. We have included sound files for three of the eleven songs, which can be listened to by clicking the sound file boxes above. Both test pressings have Peer-Southern/Music-Time labels with the following address: 1619 Broadway, New York, NY 10019. The song titles on the labels are: Auctioneer, Pity Poor Married John, Water, Pit Of Pity, Garden, Pain, Plea To A Wise Man, Mynah Bird, St, Valentine's Road, Too Many Tomorrows, and Someone. [St Valentine's Road, Pity Poor Married John, and Water can be heard above].
On the first page of the typewritten promo sheets is a hand-styled letterhead for "Gretchen" and the address P.O Box 226, Allendale, New Jersey (no zip code). The staple is rusty. Excerpts from the promotional material include, "You are about to be introduced to a newly discovered translation of the word music...[Gretchen] is abstract until her members make her presence felt through the unification of mind, body, soul and for lack of a better vehicle, musical instruments." and also, "Gretchen... is already capable of assuming the responsibility of leadership among the musical kingdom...the printed word is a very poor medium to explain and express the spiritualistic precepts and ideology which form the foundation of Gretchen..." it goes on to talk about each member musician, and continues, "Gretchen is a free musical thought she is unhampered by time and conventional trivia...Everyone everywhere is part of the audience but never consciously..." Great stuff. Since this a special unique item, winning bidder should wait for invoice instructions before paying. Genuinely and uniquely rare. Nice! No reserve. Good luck!
