Description
“The Graveyard Theme” b/w “The Marble Orchard” by The Graveyard Five
on Stanco 102—original U.S. pressing from 1968. This legendary garage 45 is not just unimaginably rare (with only about four other copies believed to exist)—it is also an incredibly great record! The A-side is a fantastic fuzz guitar instrumental, and the even-more-famous B-side is about an encounter with an evil presence on a stormy night in a “marble orchard” or cemetery.
It’s one of the few releases on Stan Sweeney’s Stanco label, and the only waxing by the Graveyard Five—a foursome whose fifth member was a coffin positioned on stage! The appearance of both sides of this 45 on the compilation album “Pebbles, Vol. 16”, and their inclusion on the “Beyond the Beat Generation” internet radio station playlist have helped make this record’s reputation as one of the coolest garage singles ever to come out of California.
For some very detailed background on the genesis of this record (and the lyrics to “Marble Orchard”), see the great interview with G-5 bassist Steve Kuppinger at:
http://home.unet.nl/kesteloo/graveyard.html
Personnel: Louis Shriner, lead guitar, Gary Prather, rhythm guitar; Steve Kuppinger, bass; Dave Templeton, drums.
Condition:
Disc is VG with numerous light scratches, but plenty of original gloss. Both sides play great with only minor noise (noticeable only at beginning and end of songs), and no skips, no significant pops, no repeating clicks and no audible wear. The sound would probably be even better after a good machine cleaning, but I prefer to leave that to the discretion of the winning bidder.
Etched in dead wax on A-side: “Stanco Records SR-102-A SLS RW”
On B-side: “SR-102-B Graveyard-V SSL RW”
Labels are VG to VG+ with light ring wear, but still shiny, and all print is complete and legible. There are no tears, stickers, stains, or writing, and the minor wear around center hole on B-side does not lessen the thrill of actually seeing this incredible rarity in person.
This is a galactically rare Holy Grail garage 45 that you may never see offered for sale again! It is guaranteed to be authentic and original, and includes bragging rights that only an elite few garage collectors can claim.
