ALSO: I now apply the Ebay ‘2-day’ rule for non-payment to keep things moving – cash-flow is important for any small business. I will always keep my P&P prices as low as possible, and even after yet another Royal Mail price hike from April this year, I have NOT raised my prices and will never compromise on solid, safe packing that is invariably heavier than most you will get. My P&P offers probably the best value-for-money for vinyl records available, and I even will pay for full insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Also I aim to post the very same day after payment is received. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives.

Label/Format: Warner Bros – Original Deep Green format with WS 1893 number. Later copies had the green label but had the K- (Kinney prefix number which was totally different). This first UK pressing is considerably harder to find and not available too long. Also, this album was never issued on the orange label. Warner green label albums are seldom seen with the WS prefix.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and highly attractive with only very light, super fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. All the evidence suggests a record little played confirmed by little short of perfect sound throughout.

Cat Number: WS 1893.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 134 grams. A very good solid weight.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce as an original pressing, this did not chart in the UK and is far harder to find than the later Kinney pressings. Even harder to find in anything like decent conditions. The cover is very prone to wear and the record’s music quite delicate, this copy plays beautifully with barely anything unwanted at all.

Brief Info: This classic Grateful Dead album, their sixth, followed the mellow Workingman’s Dead set – this one indeed was mellower still and again sounding very similar to Crosby, Stills and Nash. There are no overlong solos, simply ten lovely laid-back songs of high class. This is easily my favourite Grateful Dead album. Whether a dedicated ‘Dead Head’ or not, most fans of quality music will enjoy this set that is now regarded as a classic and many agree, their finest ever album.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a single format with a laminated front that covers all the folded edges and ends via the spine on the back. Printed in England by West Brothers Printers Ltd.

Lamination & Front: Another beautiful Grateful Dead cover, their early albums especially always included spectacular and really lovely graphics, this is no exception. Firstly, this cover is the genuine original with the WS 1893 catalogue number, beware of substitutions that appear almost the same but are far more common. The laminate retains a very fine shine, with fine freshness and clarity, it has no lifting. Any creases are few and light, most seen as fine edge types that few will avoid totally. Under angled light, a little light dulling is seen, but not a great deal and far less than most I have seen. Knowing how badly the cover wears, this is one of the best originals I have seen for quite some considerable time.

Cover Back: The back is highly unforgiving, and seems to wear worse than many covers of a similar type. In terms of rubbing, very little at all, mild traces near the bottom edge and hardly any creasing again. The actual end-panel card has a little burring and fine rubbing, but again is so difficult to avoid and only quite minor anyway. The lack of ringwear and grubbiness are both considerable pluses, overall, this back will not prove easy to find better.

Top Edge: The main laminated fold has barely any wear and is still straight. As mentioned above, just a little thickening of the actual rear end card which is a fraction proud of the fold, hence hard to avoid totally.

Bottom Edge: As above with the end panel card a little more thickened, being the storage edge, that can be no real surprise.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mainly quite sharp with only a little gentle thicking with the odd small burr trace as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge and it is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. The fine unprotected strip on the front where the laminate ends a little short being present and with little wear.

Spine and Text: The spine looks very neat indeed, four hairline creases means not totally solid, but still straight with mimimal compression. Practically all text is present and neat, three of the hairline creases have passed through characters, so a couple of tiny chips – so small in fact, few would even both to mention it.

Corners: A little tip rubbing and creasing, maybe the odd tiny tip-in – that uncertain. Fine shape largely retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this scarce and true original 1970 cover, one that could prove quite difficult to find much better. Just enough to remind gently of age and fragility, and in real terms, this will not prove easy to find better, it should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NO GRADE: again another from the collection where some inners had been written on, so any grading would be purely subjective. However, with no writing, an excellent grade would have been appropriate. This the original heavy-duty polylined inner that is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text. It has two ultra crisp and undamaged window circles and a very clear lining. Some natural crinkle and mild creasing, all edges unsplit with no repairs. Interestingly, the neatly handwritten text on both sides is in French – I think it’s poetry, for me and arguably, it does not even detract.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT / EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed. There is a visible surface mark on side one, but it has NO sound whatsoever. Any other visual blemishes are few, fine and very faint as seen with more scrutiny under bright angled light. A copy with only modest plays on all the evidence, that reitterated by superb quality sound. Visually a super first issue record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this genuine first pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only quite lightly. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, this has delicate and mostly acoustic music and vocals, it needs a top pressing for maximum pleasure, and this easily measures up. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
