GRATEFUL DEAD “Ain’t It Crazy” 1972 Sugar Magnolia Records, Bootleg Release.
50+ year old Grateful Dead live bootleg. The vinyl looks great, shiny and I can’t see any significant marks. The plain white sleeve has a b&w printed cover that has some yellowing with age, but no splits or major creases. The inner sleeve is a generic white paper. This is something vintage from before trading cassette tapes of live performances was common for Dead heads.
In 1972 commercially available live recordings were rare. In every head shop, a selection of bootleg records were available to purchase. It was a “gray area” legally, but most artists didn’t care as it helped increase their fan base. Multiple Dead bootlegs were available, and this one was popular but rare. Released by The White Label Folks under the label name of Sugar Magnolia Records; the label evolved into Berkeley Records. The tracks were probably taken from 1971 shows at the Fillmore East. Interesting that the song “Bertha” was listed as “I Had To Move”…it was before the song came out on the “Skull and Roses” live album and got a name. This bootleg was from the Dead’s golden period, where fans saw them in theaters and not arenas. If you collect Grateful Dead vinyl, this artifact is a treat for your catalog.
