Rarity: SCARCE: and even more so a UK-pressed record. I feel sure UK copies always includes the complex American cover. Finding this intact with the 3D-glass NOT removed are rare. Also this has the US Fan Club Inner Sleeve and a superb unmounted poster.

Brief Info: Album number eight and follow-up to the very successful ‘We’re An American Band’. Todd Rundgren produced but proving less successful than than it’s predecessor. Always more popular in their native US, UK pressings of this record are scarce. Original copies had a very specialised cover: the artwork and prized poster in 3D, the cover-attached glasses had to be used to view it properly, hence most are removed from the cover making intact examples very elusive indeed. UK records included the American cover, clearly this was a complex and expensive cover to produce, it even includes the original ‘Saturn’-shaped sticker near the front top left corner as seen in close-up. The 3D glasses have a die-cut tab on the left to grip to pull the glasses off the cover, the glasses themselve were held on by tiny card tabs and a few have pulled, but most are attached and firm. The nose area is perforated with just a little minor surface creasing. As stated above, this includes the poster and it is unmounted and superb along with the 1974 tour and Fan Club inner – neither easy to find. The record has a few surface marks but superficial and the record plays very well indeed with top sound and production. It is the first complete UK pressed copy I have ever seen and another elusive near 40-year-old gem for collectors and fans.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: and given all the facts, to even find one pretty much intact is very difficult indeed. 3D graphics with the cut, perforated glasses unused. A single matt cover that was manufactured in the band’s native US, the original track list sticker on the front is still attached. Includes poster and inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A complex cover which I have outlined above. The most important factors are the 3D glasses are still largely attached and the rare cover sticker is neat and has never been removed and little aged with only mild grubbiness. The cover has a little corner and faint edge rubbing and a couple of surface creases on the bottom. A very small and fine crease to the left of the due-cut ‘flap’ on the spine edge, but mostly intact with just a tiny neat split that is close to impossible to avoid as the bridge from cut to spine is only 1 cm. The lack of rubbing to the surface is always a bonus on such covers and it remains clean and still fresh. All the cut-out areas – the blue and red eye pieces are star-shaped – are crisp and with barely any burring with no damage. The odd tiny surface chip but little else on the cover surface. Intricate and fragile, I would guess all examples were American-made and it will not prove easy to find much better.

Cover Back: This has little wear at all, it is solid with no cut-out parts. Clean with barely any rubbing and no ring wear. A little minor edge rubbing and odd small mark, but clean and attractive.

Top Edge: A few small chips and rubbing near the ends, generally straight and neat.

Bottom Edge: Fairly modest patchy rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, reasonably sharp with little wear, some thickening and mild burring seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: This has faired very well: solid, straight with minimal compression. Any rubbing little and light with virtually all text unworn. A fine crease near the narrow ‘bridge’ area as described above.

Corners: All corners have moderate rubbing with decent shape retained.

Cover Summary: An immensely fragile specialised cover and rare with the 3D glasses still largely attached. I am sure a high percentage of owner’s would not have resisted pulling off the glasses to view the 3D effect of the cover, so ones that are still largely intact are elusive and scarce. Also hugely prone to all forms of wear and damage, finding it with so little overall and still with the ‘Saturn’ sticker will never prove easy. So not for the perfectionist, but many collectors will enjoy this one.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: and looks even better. One corner crease only and still clean, fresh and attractive. The coloured side lists all the 1974 Grand Funk tour dates and the lower part is a Fan Club coupon, here fully intact with nothing removed or written on. The other side has the songs and credit text. A neat bottom edge movement split was very carefully and neatly repaired by myself and now barely even registers. Both left and right edges are fully intact and the top entrance neat, crisp and untorn.

The 3D Poster: EXCELLENT(++): a single folded card 3D graphic poster, printed on one side only and unmounted. The white back has just one small mark and barely aged at all. The front side is superb with only a little fine and light rubbing the manufactured fold. Very clean and fresh, also rare and often missing altogether, it will not prove easy to find better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: with a few light superficial surface marks that have no sound. A very fine visual copy that is clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. Like the cover, not for the visual perfectionist, but this UK-pressed example offers very clean and enjoyable sound and could prove difficult to find a great deal better.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This elusive record plays above it’s solid visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound with excellent production by Rundgren. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. This record and it’s unusual and packaging and contents will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
