By 1971, the band-the-critics-loved-to-hate, Grand Funk Railroad proved that they weren't going to go away, or allow the fickle music press get them down. The primal onslaught of hard rock and dense blues from the Flint, Michigan power trio was just what the long hair youth of America clinged to as the flower-power scene was left in the dust. First and foremost Grand Funk Railroad was a people's band. Fuck the high-brow critics.
Still under the heavy-hand of manager and producer Terry Knight, Grand Funk Railroad once again returned to Cleveland to lay down the songs for their fourth studio LP. Entitled Survival, with Mark Farner, Don Brewer and Mel Schacher pictured on the cover as if they were extras from the television show It's About Time, the seven song effort includes a pair of cover tracks, which contrast Survival's earthy original numbers.
Recorded during January of 1971, the songs from Survival are more intricately arranged than those from previous GFR albums, while the group pulled back on the heavy end, as Farner added more organ fills, and Schacher's bass lines carried less distortion.
Opening with Mark's "Country Road", a song that calls for the simple life, side one includes the spiritual "Comfort Me", as well as a remake of the Dave Mason penned "Feelin' Alright". The flip side begins with "I Want Freedom", showcasing Farner's keyboard work, which segues into Brewer's heartfelt, seven-minute "I Can Feel Him in the Morning". Survival closes with the third lengthy track from side two, a Detroit-leaning cover of the Stones' "Gimme Shelter".
Issued on April 15, 1971, Survival went top ten, peaking at number six on the Billboard album chart, and the subsequent world tour was a massive draw, which included a free concert at Hyde Park in London, on July 3rd. Comin' out of the rough 'n' tough rustbelt, GFR were true survivors...

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The album comes with original bonus photos (3 photos altogether) of the three group members as cavemen
(c) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(d) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
(e) Important disclosure: VISUALLY, THE RECORD is STRONG VERY GOOD+(+). HOWEVER, WE CAUTION THAT a record has a BARELY DETECTABLE – a deviance of about 0.3 degrees from its horizontal axis. This has ABSOLUTELY NO EFFECT ON PLAYING and is only a very minor visual distraction.
· COVER
COVER IS STRONG NEAR MINT, STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has a minor 'bump' (tear on the paper slick on the back panel, which is wrinkled and misfolded), apparently being a minor misfolding manufacturing flaw. Please note that this affects ONLY a small section of the paper slick (NOT the cardboard base itself) and may well be possible to straighten out once the shrink wrap has been removed.
NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:
- No split seams
- No ring wear
- No cut-out (drill) holes.
- No cut-out corners
- No saw-marks or indents
- No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)
- No wrinkles or creases
- No yellowing from aging
- No writing
- No stamps
- No peel-off marks
- No stains
- No mold or mildew spots
- No stickers or labels (the price sticker you see on the back appears on the shrink wrap, NOT on the cover itself)
- No water damage
- No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or cuts.
- No warping
- No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover
- No glue traces or wax residue.
- No bar codes
