This is an excellent "best of" compilation that was released about the time that GFR split from their long time manager and producer, Terry Knight. The messy legal battle that ensued almost destroyed the band and left them to start over again from scratch. Mark, Don, and Mel has not been released on CD and probably won't ever be, despite the fact that Knight passed away recently. Whether or not this is due to legal reasons, or the band wants nothing to do with Knight's legacy is unknown to this writer. It is a shame, because this double LP is chock full of GREAT music and is and excellent starter set for someone being introduced to GFR's days as a power trio. The rhythm section of bassist Mel Schacher and Don Brewer is among the best ever in rock and roll, and counts among its peers Jack Bruce & Ginger Baker of Cream, and John Entwistle & Keith Moon of The Who. They play a unique style of R & B flavored rock that is both driving and funky. This is stated in the present tense because Don & Mel are still touring with a revamped GFR. Most of the songs on Mark,Don, & Mel, though, are not part of their current live set.

The album contains 3 sides of studio music and one side of live performances, all taken from GFR's first six albums. In addition to the great selection of songs, including "Are You Ready", "Paranoid", "T.N.U.C.", "Inside Looking Out", and a great cover of Dave Mason's "Feelin' Alright", the package came with a great 18 x 24 inch poster, and the two inner record sleeves were plastered front and back with press clippings, photos, and critical reviews. That material alone is worth the price of the album, and it is very interesting to note that Grand Funk achieved enormous success in spite of little airplay on radio during this period, and being almost universally hated by the critics. Not so with their legions of fans and the untold number of musicians who have been heavily influenced by Grand Funk's music.

(b)            The records are  apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The records are believed to come in their original, custom, inner sleeves, which are UNIQUE to this album.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

COVER IS NEAR MINT, STILL SEALED AND COVERED IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP   (A SMALL PIECE OF SHRINK WRAP IS MISSING)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         The laminated cover has a few air 'bubbles' and wrinkles in lamination (this is a common problem with most laminated 50’s and 60’s covers

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.

-         The cover has some dust speckles scattered here and there under the shrink wrap; these tiny spots can almost certainly be cleaned up or wiped off once the shrink wrap has been removed.

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine (BARELY VISIBLE)
