HERE is a fully complete, earliest possible pressing of an historic recording: The Sound of '65 by The Graham Bond Organisation, on blue/black Columbia from (of course) 1965.

Only the very first pressings of this recording have '33SX' on the labels, and this '33SX' copy, bearing 1/G and 1/R mother stampers, would have been one of the very first to have left the factory back in '65.

This fine disc comes complete with its very first press Garrod & Lofthouse front laminated flipback cover. Very few true first pressing covers were printed, as there was a problem that needed to be swiftly rectified, and these are identifiable by the black and white band photo on the rear panel. Only on examples of the very first press cover does this photo extend the full depth of the adjoining text. In my final photo you can see an illustration of a second pressing sleeve, where the black and white band photo is only half the size of the first press cover shot, even lacking the overlaid text ('BLUES GRAHAM BOND') of the original. But this first press sleeve also happened to omit two crucial credits, a fault rectified on all subsequent pressings; on this first press sleeve there is no credit for cover design - Ginger Baker, and no credit for Chris Welch - sleevenotes.

So you can see that here is a genuine first press slab of vinyl (from one of the first batches to leave the factory) correctly housed in its true first press cover.

Both blue/black Columbia labels are in strong VG condition, with moderate spindle markings visible when examined under light, but certainly no spindle wear. Both sides of the vinyl are also in strong VG condition, with just light and wispy surface marks showing when examined under harsh halogen lighting.

The front laminated flipback sleeve is in fine VG condition with only light creasing on the front and general foxing/discolouration of the unlaminated rear panel, which looks more discoloured in the photo than it actually is.

The sound of '65, featuring Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce, is a significant recording. In Galactic Ramble, Aaron Milenski (one of the most respected contributors) writes: 'This album, which preceded the Clapton Bluesbreakers (let alone Cream), sounds remarkably modern today. ... the groove is solid and sleazy ... there's some powerful and unique music here.'

Here is a great example of this rare and historic precursor to Cream, and a true and complete first pressing of The Sound of '65, with '33SX', the larger black and white band photo, and omission of sleeve design and sleevenotes' credits.
