GRACHAN MONCUR III – Evolution ORIG Blue Note LP / BLP 4153 (US, Mono, 1963)
PLEASE SEE MY OTHER US BLUE NOTE LPs I CURRENTLY HAVE LISTED
Happy to present this most intriguing album featuring along with Moncur Jnr; Lee Morgan, Jackie McLean, Bobby Hutcherson, Bob Crenshaw & Tony Williams. Some sterling playing on this which was recorded in November 1963. I believe this to be the 1st mono press with all the 1st press indicators. Please read on…
The single format, stiff, thick, non-laminated US-style sleeve grades VG+ (Very Good Plus) and is a strong and solid example with the following imperfections away from mint: a 2-inch split to the top edge (note this is mainly the paper rather than the jacket); some shelf rubs to the top and bottom edges; minor corner wear mainly to the spine ends; a fine pen line to the rear right and some very slight stain spots in the same area. Note also that the rear slick is not straight, it was originally pasted with a slight lean. Other than these, it’s very pleasing and has no stickers, no creases, strong opening edges with little, if any, feathering and a nice intact spine (some age toning here). Structurally still sound and looking good in its 50th year. Note also it has the ‘43 West 61ST St, New York 23’ address to the lower rear.
The labels are great, NO writing, stickers, residue or rips/tears. Soft, not even moderate spindle evidence when tilted into the light. They have the ‘New York USA’ text.
The vinyl has ‘VAN GELDER’ machine stamped into the run-offs both sides and an ‘ear’ symbol etched also. There are 3 scuff marks to Side 1 and hardly anything to Side 2 bar some ultra faint hairlines. NO scratches or gouges. There is a pattern imprinted to both sides which looks like the record has been cleaned then returned to the jacket before it’s fully dried (sure this is removable). Visually again grades VG+ (Very Good Plus), if not better, maintains a good shine. IT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO and plays very well with a hint of dust static/light crackle, generally under not over the music, and only really noticeable in the quiet sections of the record. NO snap, pops, repeated clicks, distortion or loss of clarity/lack of definition. In fact, sounds extremely sharp and clear and is a testament to the renowned RVG mastering.
No reserve.
