Reference lacquers for GOVERNMENT ISSUE's "Joyride" LP on Fountain of Youth Records FOY 009(1984)

These were played once or twice and have been stored for the last 25 years.  As issued, these 2 discs are in a plain white double-LP sleeve.
On the front cover is a white label with the Masterdisk logo and address, and the following typewritten text: "GOVERNMENT ISSUE,
LSR RECORDS 6/18/84".  The disk labels have same text plus "SIDE A" on the first disk and "SIDE B" on the second one.  Both labels also have "12" 33  STEREO" on them.  Another point of explanation,  LSR Records was the in-house label of Dutch East India who was at that time in an exclusive pressing and distribution deal with Fountain of Youth Records.

Please note again these are not vinyl test pressings of the commercial release. When a record pressing plant does a test pressing, it is common to press 5 copies, 3 for the customer[although in the case of Fountain of Youth, enough copies were made in most cases so that each band member could receive a copy as well as label folks], and two for their files. This requires the press to cycle 5 times to pop out 5 copies. When  a reference lacquer (also sometimes referred to as acetate disc) is cut, it's a complete cutting with all the equipment set to how the plant plans to cut your master disk. The blank lacquers are cut in real time. The purpose of a reference lacquer is to check how your music will translate to vinyl without having to go through the full mastering, plating and test pressing stage. Reference lacquers are meant not to replace test pressings.

Another note,  Fountain of Youth only went to the trouble of ordering reference lacquers on 2 or 3 occasions.

"The GIs began to display marked maturity and a bit of stylistic independence on 1984's Joyride, loudly co-produced by Baker. With improvements in Tom Lyle's guitar work and Schroeder's singing, and the arrival of Mike Fellows, the quartet's third bassist (and most competent to date), Joyride takes a few cautious steps away from hardcore orthodoxy...Odd inclusions: a sludgy but tuneful cover of "These Boots Are Made for Walkin," the second version of "Hall of Fame" (from Boycott Stabb) and another (uncredited) version of "Sheer Terror." from the Trouser Press website

More about acetates/lacquers from Wikipedia:

"An acetate disc (also known as a test acetate, lacquer, or transcription disc) is a type of gramophone record that is recorded directly from an audio source. Although acetates can be made from any audio source, they are typically produced from a master tape recording for testing the quality of the tape-to-disc transcription. A typical acetate disc is an aluminum disc, 10 or 12 inches in diameter, that is covered with a thin coating of nitrocellulose lacquer in which the sound groove is cut. Discs of this type can be played on any normal phonograph, but wear out very quickly. Some acetates are highly prized for their rarity...."

"Acetates have not always been used solely as a means of checking the quality of a disc recording. They were widely used before magnetic tape was invented and in the modern era they are used by dance music DJs. Because of their limited useful lifetime, acetates were often used as "demos" of new recordings by artists and record labels..."
