First released in 1998, Obscura marked the third full-length from Canadian technical death metal legends Gorguts. Serving as the follow up to 1993's The Erosion Of Sanity, the album is heralded by numerous voices within the scene as one of the most integral staples of the "tech-death" blueprint. Known for their numerous line-up shifts, the stable in place in the mid-90s allowed primary songwriter and sole original member Luc Lemay to pool creative resources with the late Steeve Hurdle (Purulence) who also contributed concept ideas and aided Lemay in immortalising the band as the new standard by which all future death metal extremists would be compared. Atonal, dissonant, alien, these are some of the many words that have been used in futile attempt to describe the indecipherable sonics, akin to a form of Lovecraftian cosmology transmuted via complex vibrations heard as death metal. Fret-mangling solos, intricate tapwork, Octopus-like drumfills and blast-beats that seem like they're attempting to send Morse Code messages, and this is before unpacking the lyrical departure that saw a hard pivot away from the gory or macabre and a complete embracing of existential themes of the esoteric and spiritual. As Lemay himself would later surmise, "the record that defined our sound", it would also entirely reshape the 21st death metal landscape.
