Originally released in 2001, From Wisdom to Hate marked the fourth full-length from Canadian technical death metal avantgarde legends Gorguts. The brainchild of primary songwriter Luc Lemay, this work is often perceived as somewhat of a middle-ground between the brutal heaviness of the band's 1991 debut album Considered Dead and its 1993 sophomore follow up The Erosion of Sanity, and the warped, hyper-technical head melting impenetrable prog majesty of 1998's definitive career height Obscura. Channelling their dense craftsmanship into more manageable song lengths and structures, complete with fret-mangling guitar solos, octopus-like blast-beats and high concept lyricism buried beneath the guttural vocals delving into the discovery of Mesopotamia and the cultures that made up the cradle of civilization, where all of the knowledge of mathematics, science and architecture came from. While appeasing both sides of the fanbase immensely, tragically the suicide of newfound drummer Steve MacDonald in 2002, would eventually lead to the dissolution of the band, with it being another few years before Lemay would revive the project with an entirely new lineup.
