One of the most anticipated reissues that 2008 had to offer, Gore's first two albums have been given the deluxe treatment by Southern Lord and are now available on both limited edition vinyl and a comprehensive CD collection. Both Hart Gore and its follow-up Mean Man's Dream remain the crucial Gore albums, where the Dutch instrumental hardcore outfit designed and perfected their brand of crushing riff hypnosis that would would become one of the more influential sounds in the heavy music underground. Featuring former members of thrashcore pioneers Pandemonium and tied in with the Dutch anarcho-squatter scene that existed in the 1980's, Gore dealt in stripped down, vocal-free heaviness that was unparalled in the mid 1980's, their sound centered around minimal but DEVESTATING riffs woven around brutal drumming that locked in to huge repetitive grooves, almost like a krautrock Melvins, but even heavier than that would suggest. Each song would consist of just one or two riffs that are ground out over and over and over, a huge hypnotic riff-battery that can lull you into a trance and pulverise you at the same time. These guys were ridiculously heavy, one of the heaviest bands ever, actually, right up their on the list with the likes of Skullflower, Godflesh, Swans, Zeni Geva, Melvins, and Eyehategod, slow and punishing but not really "metal", but definitely metallic and crushing.
Gore's legendary debut album Hart Gore from 1986 captures the volatile energy of the Dutch band at their inception, with some of the heaviest riffs that the band ever came up with, huge sludgy riffs that sound like the guitarists took the best midtempo mosh parts from the best 80's hardcore jams, and got rid of everything else, hammering out those brutal, catchy riffs into repetitious forms over pounding, skull-crushing drums, sometimes caught in a crushing motorik groove like a post-apocalyptic cross between Neu! and Swans and Godflesh (and keep in mind, this album is from long before Godflesh came on to the scene!), elsewhere they lock in to massive stop-start jams with crazed guitar-noise solos and sinister leadwork played over top, or lethal chug-a-thons that sound like a thrash metal riff slowed down to half-speed. The whole album flows together like one massive piece, each song a different chapter of skullcrushing, hypnotic ultra-heavy repeato-rock with awesome hooks behind the riffs, all super catchy and memorable. Hearing this album from 1986 and how awesome and powerful the riffs and arrangements are, it's not hard to see how Gore have been a seminal influence on just about every instrumental rock or metal band that has emerged since then.
The first record in this set has the entire Hart Gore studio album, and the second LP features various unreleased recordings from the same era, including professionally recorded live tracks recorded between 1985 and 1987 throughout Europe, a grungy cover of Bowie's "Station To Station", demo stuff, and unheard studio recordings. Which makes this reissue totally essential for Gore fans, or anyone else who hasn't yet experienced their legendary hypno-crush. The packaging for these vinyl editions is gorgeous, too; Hart Gore is presented in a thick oversized sleeve with the two records housed in thick printed innersleeves that also have extensive liner notes written by the members of Gore that go into great depth about the history of the band, loads of rare old photos, and the band's "lyrics", grim, horrific writings that were written to tie in with each of the songs, in English as well as Dutch; the new LP design takes the original cover artwork and incorporates it into a sleek layout with new drawings, all put together by Stephen O'Malley with the members of Gore. © CRUCIAL BLAST
