Golden Earring
'To The Hilt'
Polydor, UK, 1974
2480 330
THE Earring were one of my favourite bands during the seventies for a number of reasons not least because they displayed an air of sophistication and intrique. Barry Hay's unique vocal timbre teeterd on the edge of the bizarre with his faintly Euro fried Americaisms and superb lyrical approach. The songs were always long and convoluted with eiry beginnings, tough middle sections and wonderful extended endings. They always gave the impression that they were a thinking man's rock band much in the manner of say, Blue Oyster Cult or UFO but without falling into needless heavy metal cliche.
Sure 'Radar Love', despite being one of the all time great rock anthems, became something of a ball & chain for them - something that they never quite recovered from - but the depth and extent of their recorded work featured on every relief was really quite breathtaking. 'To The Hilt' is no exception featuring just seven songs and housed in one of the most striking Hipgnosis designed gatefold covers of all time.
Touring with the Who paid handsome dividends as their musical creativity reached new strengths. Tracks like 'Normal', the ten minute 'Violins' and 'Sleep Walkin'' inpartcular move the bands music to another level whilst guitarist george Kooyman's bobs and weaves between the tracks to co-ordinate and craft a sensational tapestry rivalled only by the work of Pete Townsend.
This really is a great album; demanding and yet utterly free-form with all the right moves over and over again.
This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.
