Label Conditions: All four look practically as-made: two quite immaculate, barely played records with little short of pristine sound throughout. Any spindle traces minuscule.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of Records: 134 / 145 grams. Very solid weights, the second record especially.

Rarity: Scarce: and in this condition rare. Firstly the cover – massively wear-prone. Thin card and an unprotected gatefold format, two thick records inside for around 46 years, a sure-fire recipe for rubbing and heavy ringwear, and this cover is notorious for both. This cover has little of either and to date, it has to be the very best example I have yet seen – not perfect, but in terms of this one, near exceptional. Good news already, but both records are stunning, and for certain, hardly even played. Beautifully pressed with fantastic sound, I could not fault anything for sound. Even the inner sleeves are neat and intact as seen. Lastly, as seen by the matrixes and stampers below, this is one of the earliest copies pressed with all bar one stamper ‘1’s. It has been at least 10+ years since I last offered one of these, and I doubt if I will see or hear a better, or earlier copy.

Brief Info: A double live album recorded at the Royal Albert Hall in London, on 15 January 1970, with the original full line up. Formed by former Cream drummer Ginger Baker after the split of the short-lived ‘super-group’ Blind Faith, Air Force played a heavy-style of fusion rock. Again with a host of famous musicians listed above, they followed this set with ‘II’ in the same year, but then also folded. The original covers for this album were made reversed e.g. left-handed. with the main graphic on the back. This one almost seems to have dried up now, not seen one for ages myself anyway, and never one quite like this as explained in the ‘Rarity’ paragraph. .

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: but ‘excellent’ for this cover translates to ‘very impressive’, because most that surface are a tatty and worn. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group, includes ‘0670’ inner sleeves.

Cover Front: This the one without text. A hint of rim rubbing near the very top edge centre, but little else at all. Any creasing minimal and faint, the artwork with deep colour and freshness. I consider this face exceptional.

Cover Back: With the text matter. Gentle, fine rim rubbing near the bottom, again little else. One small tip crease. When seen like this, a cover of beauty, but few make the grade these days. Although not perfect, it could prove a huge upgrade for some collectors.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Apart from a little gentle creasing near a couple of corners, there is little else to fault again. This again being exceptional for silver-grey and copper colour ink, that is massively prone to wear.

Top Edges: A little patchy light rubbing to black edges. Both straight, flat and near flush.

Bottom Edges: Light to moderate patchy rubbing on these storage edges, probably the least to be expected really.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both clean and still mostly sharp with little wear. Any thickening or burring little and light as seen viewed end-on. Records enter on these edges that are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Small light rubbing near the very ends. A solid, thick spine that remains straight with hardly any compression and minimal tilt. Also folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and very near parallel. All text perfect, and the graphic hardly worn either (up to the ends as mentioned). Even the fold hinges have avoided rubbing or scuffs.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubbing with very fine shape retained. No bashes, any dinking little and light.

Cover Summary: Given the format of this cover, I consider this close to exceptional with most of any wear on the storage edges and corner tips that few can hope to avoid. This attractive item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT: as minimum, one better still. One has a crease and both are only gently aged. Four crisp window circles and the polylinings clear and fresh. All edges unsplit with no repairs, the top openings crisp, neat with no tears. Date-coded 060 (June 1970)

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(–): and even this is being critical. Two fantastic, age-defying records that are incredibly clean with fantastic shine and very solidly pressed. Even under bright angled light, I am truly struggling to find any marks or blemishes at all, even wispy traces – quite honestly – this pair of records look new. Pressed on quality pure vinyl, no mottle or dulling is seen, thus the sound quality totally matches the incredible visual. The owner without any doubt hardly played these, and the good news, no inner bag dulling which often happens when records are left untouched inside polylined inner sleeves this amoutn of time. Every collector will be delighed with these records – I can hardly believe them myself.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This supreme quality double album plays up to it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful live double. No exaggeration: these two records could prove nigh-on impossible to find better – a term I rarely even think about using, but both records are in incredible visual and playing conditions – a pair time has totally overlooked.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
