This is a VERY rare 1955 Signal album reissued two years later on Savoy SV-0126, incl. Speculation, In a Meditating Mood, Social Call, Smoke Signal, You'll Always Be the One I Love, Kerry Dance, Shuffle Boil, Brake's Sake, Gallop's Gallop, Nica's Tempo ; three different groups drawn from Gryce (alt.), Art Farmer (trpt), Bill Barber (tba), Horace Silver (pno), Oscar Pettiford (bs), Jimmy Cleveland (trb), Gunther Schuller (fr. hn), Danny Bank (bs), Kenny Clarke (drms), Art Blakey (drms), Eddie Bert (trb), Julius Watkins (fr. hn), Cecil Payne (bass), Ernestine Anderson (vcl), Thelonious Monk (pno) and Percy Heath (bs).

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE SIDE 1 OF THE RECORD EXCELLENT. This is one of those sides that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          WE GRADE SIDE 2 OF THE RECORD AS VERY GOOD+ . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters) and one is slightly deeper and possibly audible

(c)           The record has a ►Rudy Van Gelder name, or  his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME  Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or  personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.

(d)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)             Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+ (VG+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has all three seams (top, bottom and spine) partially split,  as follows:

-         Top seam: between 8 and 10 inches  / 20 to 22 centimeters.

-         Bottom seam: less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters.

-         Spine: between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters.

-         Cover has some visible wear / fraying on all three seams

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-         Cover has a visible wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the back panel

-         Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
