THE CAVAQUINHO:
The Brazilian Cavaquinho, Hawaiian Ukulele and Venezuelan Cuatro are all believed to come from the same parent: the Portuguese Cavaquinho. The Brazilian Cavaquinho or Cavaco is a small four stringed instrument (steel strings) used in Brazilian samba schools, pagode and Choro music. Its high tinkling tones cut right across the percussion section of a samba band and can be used either as a base guitar or as the soloist. Most Popular Tuning Formats: D-G-B-D (same as guitar) or G-D-A-E (same as Mandolin).
THE WOODS:
Castelo (Calycophyllum multiflorum)
Castelo is a light exotic wood that grows in Brazil and other parts of South America. It is also called palo blanco, ibirá-morotí or verdolaga. It makes an excellent laminated soundboard with a stable sound and good projection. Its appereance varies from white or grey to yellow white or grey to brown, occasionally with yellowish-brown.
Imbuia (Phoebe porosa)
Imbuia is a dark, exotic wood that grows in southern Brazil. It has been called "Brazilian walnut," but it's not a genuine walnut. Imbuia is a hard, dense wood, so it produces a relatively tight, bright, "direct" tone that lends itself to amplification. It offers good tonal separation from string to string, while retaining plenty of the essential bass "thump." The appearance is yellow-olive to chocolate brown, sometimes gray-brown, with variegated streaks and stripes and the grain pattern varies widely, with many different figures.
