very important surf collectable.No doubt the rarest of the 4 great progressive oZ surf film trippy soul surfer soundtracks from the very early 70s.

~~I like this period & album very much,so much that I've included 3 relative items FYInterest

1~a direct copy of period decal I have from that comp that you can iron-on to a dark or lite T-Shirt(see pic of my T with transfer on) 

2~ an A4 archival* direct digital print of  crew+ from SURF Int v3#3 (unfortunatley I can't attribute photographer as true to the "soul surfer understatement" ethic of the very early 70s and late 60s pics were rarely noted).

3~an A5 archival direct digital print of a typically understated full page ad (yes this was a full page colour ad) in SW v14#2 for Shane Surfboards, that reads as an apologetic for Ted Spencer not being in this contest..

~The oZ mags SURF Int v3#3(pictured) & SW v14#2 ..significantly dedicated these whole issues to the contest.

~All the surfing magazines tended to report critically that this contest was a dud or emblematic of the decay of yet another culturally imperialistic enterprise.And wouldnt've helped that the surf was crap for the most part...BUT in hindsight all the footage and pics tend to show better than average surf, said to be predominatly from the finals in Johanna..?

So highly documented was this contest,(incd films,record & mags) probaly more so than any other. In particular Aust mags, commentry/pics continued  throughout several issues including even prior to the afformentioned dedicated issues. SW was partriculary exhaustive in its text and pics while SURF Int is just beautiful in its understated layout,photo presentation and its interspersed reduced text/commentry that borders on poetry.(Sad that this was the second last issue and we didn't get at least another 12 months of SURFs poetic documentation & insight)Both mags show great surf contrary to the journalism.

This was where those fantastic pics of Wayne Lynch doing those 'round-house vertical back handed reo's' came from!..This was maybe 1 year before TRACKS.

*Back To Nothing..a curious title.

The importantance of this contest, arguably stands as a well documented time marker to the very end of the longboard/transition & therefore into the then now evolution of the shortboard.

[Albeit somewhat contrary, american/Rolf Aurness won on a much longer board than what oZ surfers were riding. But this could well have had more to do with the pervasion of period counter-culture revolution 'tune in drop out' philosophies, exspressed perhaps a little stronger in oZ surfers, who were well at home with their unashamed 'nothing to loose' confidence in the company of there own turf ..so the tortoise became the hare?].

 Period observers noted that it may have been the last world pro contest(for a while anyway).This was when soul surfing was at it's most pungent and competition at its most bereft. Many critical surfers like Ted Spencer, were no longer engaging in comps or often pulling out for 'ethical reasons',  an apparent lack of interest 'in that sort of scene' was also affecting crowds. Many like Nat appeared in two minds when in the arena..and their surfing expressed this ambivalence.  

It was in the following year 1971, that MOTE,the epitomy of country soul surfing, was predominatly filmed. In this year there was no world contest.

In 1972 ,the world contest, hiccuped it's last breath. The last world contest then tumbled into disinterest.

Back to nothing.

Until 1976 when the IPS organisation was formed,by Fred Hemmings, to reinvigorate the world competitive scene. Although it would be important to note that competitive surfing did survive during this period somewhat by default, through the Hawiian based  Smirnoff/Duke contests etc, also inaugurated by the previous world champ american Fred Hemmings .

>>So what this Record/LP documents that is so very interesting and peculiar to this period is the actual verbal comments and conversations recorded of those surfers (oZ&US) expressing,with apparent irony, absolutely nothing about competition surfing, but all about surfing at its most idealic..hippy/trippy/back to nature/ no logo.. best!... you may've thought that the phrase "Soul Surfing" was only recently rehashed/popularised as a common referent..but you will hear it discussed here, articulately and with verve~

the end of the begining is the begining of the end, back to nothing..then start again

And musically?..vague similarity to Tully's first album prior to SOJ.

If you have the Souvenir Programme or the fabulous SIv3#3 (both pictured) etc this would make a crucial addition to that period &/or 1970 comp or end of transition collection.
