Description

I'll never tire of telling you how **GREAT**  BERT WILLIAMS was, and on records, still IS.  So transcendent was he, that for twenty years he was the ONLY black person to record regularly (since 1901), and the ONLY Black person to star in the glittering "Ziegfeld Follies." This was before affirmative action, mind you! That he could prevail in an extremely racist culture should tell you what a tremendous and accomplished talent he had to have been - and indeed, on the evidence of his records, truly was.

THIS record, "GET UP" and "I WANT TO KNOW WHERE TOSTI WENT" is typical of the sly, subversive, seemingly casual but utterly masterful and swinging Williams delivery.  His vocal phrasing was a foretaste of Louis Armstrong and all the Black talent that followed.

This original 1920 Columbia A3305 is in neat EE- condition.

*****

These records come from my private collection, which I have been accumulating since 1967, and now am downsizing!  My highest priority in these eBay auctions is to give you the best possible idea of a record’s true condition and aesthetic value.  I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all.  If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will!  Shipping is done with expert care. Your record will brave Media Mail in a stout corregated box, between four sheets of cardboard and a couple of “packers.”  I hope you are amused by these descriptions, and by the quality of service being offered.
