Label/Format: Apple with matt, quite smooth surfaces – sides 1 to 4 have the orange coloured format as seen. Sides 5 and 6 have a more customised format.

Label Conditions: All the labels are very fresh, clean and attractive. Spindle marks are mostly very light, fine and faint. The most on side one and even here, still only few. Records two and three have hardly any. This beautiful set appears hardly played.

Warps or Lateral Movement: Assume all records I offer have no significant warping or lateral movement to cause sound or tracking issues. All should play fine even on budget turntables.

Rarity: Moderately scarce as the standard copy with the American made box and poster – as far as I am aware, ALL inner sleeves were made in the United States. A very small number of boxes and the poster were made in the UK, these are way rarer – and this copy on offer IS the UK version, as seen in my close-up picture. Most consider the American box, inners and poster with the British-made records to be the standard copy for the UK market – so a genuine UK-printed poster, and especially the box are rarely seen. Not only that, finding the box with the fragile lid and its tape intact is even harder still. Also the superb very large poster still unmounted and here clearly seen with its UK imprint at the bottom, almost equally challenging. The UK box differs from the common American version, being deeper, so to help fill it out, a card ‘spacer’ was included, again that is rare as well and often discarded by those lucky enough to purchase the genuine UK-made original. Again, as-seen, this is included in this complete album package. The coloured inner sleeves are immensely fragile, all were American made with a tiny encircled ‘MADE IN THE U.S.A.’ on the bottom cornder, few survive without huge edge splits and tears. Against the odds, most of these were fully intact, just the odd tiny neat split I repaired to stop them widening – this hardly registers. All three were the most intact I have ever seen, clearly the spacer did a fine job. So just finding this with all the UK parts included and records appearing hardly played is very difficult indeed. The box is not pristine, but still a very fine one – it came from the same lot as The Beatles albums I am curretly offering and a rare opportunity for fans and collectors.

Brief Info: Harrison’s 1970 triple album classic that for me is by far the best post-Beatles album he ever made. With some material dating back to the mid-Beatles era, there are some real gems included here including the famous ‘My Sweet Lord’. Sides one to four are typical Harrison songs, while the last disc has lengthy jam instrumentals featuring a host of super-star musicians. Most interested people reading this will know all about this album already, I prefer to explain more of what is available and condition.

What This Set Includes: UK-made 1-piece box with the orange inside tray and top – 3 EMI UK pressed, all -1 matrix records – 3 US-made unlined inner sleeves – UK-made unmounted giant poster – the white front card box spacer.

Box Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or very close to, grading less would hardly being doing this ultra fragile and damage-prone box full justice. Certainly a grading put into context compared to many seen. This rare UK-made version is deeper than the rarer American version and, as seen, has the white inside tray, but orange lid (American ones were both orange). Matt finished with textured surfaces on the outer box black areas. This has a complex leather-like look for the texturing. The lid is hinged with a delicate piece of cloth tape, these often shear off to become two separate pieces, but this fragile hinge is still strong (but due care is always strongly advised when opening and closing). These have a paste-on front panel graphic which here is still very nice indeed. Still mostly clean and fresh with no rubbing and minimal hint of grubbiness or major marks. A gentle sticker residue trace near the top right is seldom avoided, a mere faint mark with no tears or pulling. The complex textured black back is generally impressive and lacking the usual heavy rubbing and wear most have. The odd small scuff and light mark can never be avoided. The most significant thing is a surface split near the central top fold – it does NOT penetrate inside – thus I state ‘surface’ – the inside of the tray is fully intact. All edges and corners remain solid as does that fragile tape hinge. All edges and corners are naturally intact apart – and so few are these days – the tray ones especially are superb. Any rubbing or scuffing to the exposed lid edges are few and light. As-seen, the spine text is a fragile gold colour, this is also mostly present and intact, any fading light, mostly to the ‘G’ in ‘GEORGE’. This not fully square in construction as-seen. Obviously, these box lids were made by hand, so imperfections in squareness will vary considerably. Insides of both lid and tray have little to fault with any ageing slight. Hopefully my pictures will show what is here. I do emphasise, the top split has NOT weakened this box at all and in real terms quite minor, but it was the only reason this box was not graded higher. With so many of these broken, flattened and tatty, this much rarer UK-made example has overall fared generally well and remains solid and attractive.

The Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT(+): but actually looking better. A couple of neat edge repairs made by myself to stop them widening, they register little. The three coloured, slightly textured inners all US-made (as all were). These were never lined, hence VERY prone to edge splits. Records inside boxes will move in transit, so many would have been split from new. These are all clean, fresh and attractive with hardly any creasing. These rarely get seen a great deal better with almost all edges naturally and still quite solidly intact. NOTE: when sending, the records will be placed inside new replacement lined inners as always, so NO danger of these fragile inners getting split.

The Poster: NEAR MINT and UNMOUNTED. Thus, no pin-holes or tape marks with no damage of any kind. Unfaded with all the folds strong with barely a trace of surface creasing, this printed on matt paper and importantly, printed in GREAT BRITAIN – one of the very few I have ever seen that was. Crisp edges and a clean back, this is unaged and looks fantastic as-seen, clearly hardly even handled. The heavily bearded Harrison looks a little spooky on this classic poster, not seen a better one to date.

The Spacer: EXCELLENT(+): I know it’s only a piece of card, but it’s a crucial part of the UK-made set, included to fill out the deeper UK-made box. This is actually quite rare itself. One side is white, the other a natural card colour. This has not creased or crushed and remains robust and clean, any marks or blemishes minimal, few and faint.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading:

DISC 1: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better, with barely any surface marks or even traces. Superb shine and appearing hardly played.

DISC 2: NEAR MINT: similar to above with barely a blemish to be seen.

DISC 3: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better, as disc 1.

A fantastic visual set that are very clean with beautiful shine and solidly pressed. Hardly played and offering impressive clean sound for all. Visually impressive records, all with -1U matrix endings. They should please many, if not most collectors and seldom seen as such.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: All three records play up to and even mostly above their respective visual gradings with little to fault and no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds minimal to none. Few copies will match let alone outperform these for all six sides. Beautifully produced and recorded, these records and their packaging should please many collectors.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
