Label/Format: Apple with matt, smooth surfaces – sides 1 to 4 have the orange coloured format as seen. Sides 5 and 6 have a customised format.

Label Conditions: All the labels are fresh, clean and attractive. Spindle marks are light, quite fine and show little. Record three have hardly any spindle marks at all.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Moderately scarce, in this condition even more so. A small run of boxes and contents were made in the UK, these are quite rare. Most consider the American box, inners and poster with the British-made records to be the standard copy for the UK market. Never easy to find any version with a superb undamaged or broken box that remains fully intact – which this is. Often the inners are in tatters, torn and split, the giant poster mounted, creased and grubby. The inners here only had a couple of neat splits which I repaired and would hardly even notice. The poster is little short of mint and unmounted. The records appear modestly played and offer very fine sound. So complete copies like this in such find condition are at something of a premium these days.

Brief Info: Harrison’s 1970 triple album that for me is by far the best post-Beatles album he ever made by some considerable distance. With some material dating back to the mid-Beatles era, there are some real gems included here including the famous ‘My Sweet Lord’. Sides one to four are typical Harrison songs, while the last disc has lengthy jam instrumentals featuring a host of super-star musicians. Most interested people reading this will know all about this album already, I prefer to explain more of what is available and it’s condition.

What This Set Includes: American-Made 1-piece box with the orange inside tray and top – 3 EMI UK pressed records – 3 US-Made Inner Sleeves – US-Made Unmounted Giant Poster.

Box Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a grading put into context compared to many seen. This American-made standard version is shallower than the rarer UK version and, as seen, has the orange inside tray and lid. Matt finished with gently textured surfaces. The lid is hinged and perfectly and strongly attached, these often shear off to become two separate pieces, but this fragile hinge is pristine. These have a paste-on front panel graphic which here is superb. Clean, fresh with no rubbing and minimal hint of grubbiness or marks. The lack of sticker stains, residues or tears is a massive plus. This front is little short of perfect being honest. The all black back is stunning, practically devoid of wear, marks and issues as well, that is rare to see. The outer edges are impressive as well, all erect without spread or distortion, the corners ALL fully intact, no bashes or repairs. Any friction rubs minor and light. The spine is very gently embossed with gold text, all unworn and neat as seen.

That leaves the inside – this is easy – all areas, including the edges are immaculate as new.

The Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT(+): but actually looking better. A couple of neat edge repairs made by myself to stop them widening, they register little. The three coloured, slightly textured inners all US-made (as per most). These were never lined, hence VERY prone to edge splits. Records inside boxes will move in transit, so many would have been split from new. These are all clean, fresh and attractive with hardly any creasing. These rarely get seen a great deal better.

The Poster: PRACTICALLY MINT and UNMOUNTED. Thus, no pin-holes or tape mark with, no damage of any kind. Unfaded with all the folds strong as made with no creasing, this printed on matt paper. Crisp edges and a clean back, this is unaged and looks new, clearly hardly even handled. The heavily bearded Harrison looks a little spooky on this classic poster, not seen a better one to date.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading:

DISC 1: EXCELLENT(+): any surface trace marks very few, fine and faint.

DISC 2: EXCELLENT(+): as above.

DISC 3: MINT(-): looks hardly even played with barely any blemishes at all.

A very clean visual set that are very clean with excellent shine and quite solidly pressed. Little played and offering very fine sound for all. Visually impressive records, all with -1U matrix endings. They should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: All three records play above their respective visual gradings with little to fault and no tracking issues*. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds minimal, gentle and faint, minor traces on the first song, but even this is being critical. Few copies will match let alone outperform these for all six sides. Beautifully produced and recorded, these records and their packaging should please many collectors.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
