Description
The Gentle Power Of Song - Circus
(Polydor583 034, 1968). Rare original 1968 14-track pop-psyche featuring arrangements by producer Richard Hill mixing harmony vocals by Caius College singer sextet with psychedelic rock backing with touches of fuzz guitar, Penny Lane-style trumpets, harpsichord, Hammond organ, etc. The group features Nick Drake collaborater/arranger Robert Kirby who provided the string arrangements for Nicks first two albums on Island and they had both performed at the Cais College May Ball 1969 (where they had met).
Producer Richard Hill was a founder member of the London Gabrieli Brass Ensemble and worked in jazz circles with the Dave Keir Jazz Band. In the mid 1960s he joined Polydor Records as a producer and studio arranger at the height of the sixties pop boom working with singer Claire Francis, Mikki Young and Ottilie Patterson. He teamed up with fellow writer/producer Johnny Hawkins of the medieval pop stage musical Canterbury Tales, which ran for over five years in the West End and later wrote scores for TV and advertising jingles.
