Brief Artist & Album Info: After four albums on the Vertigo Spiral label, this was their fifth, and appeared on the brand new WWA label, one the earliest titles issued on it. The label may be been new, but still a typical Gentle Giant album, and for me anyway, one of their very best. Certainly one of the more challenging progressive bands with complex music patterns with many time and structure changes. Very original, they had their own unique sound with musicianship of the highest quality. A band that had a strong following within their genre, but not everyone’s taste. This very early WWA copy is in super condition, the record offers superb sound with just one moderate click on side two (no mark seen, even under a magnifier, so this blemish is baffling). The silk screen cover with a lovely clean clear window shows little wear – many are seen with burred edges and tears – this has none. The transparent window front looks lovely with little to fault and the inner sheet and sleeve superb as seen. Complete examples in this condition are very challenging to find and this should please most collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a fragile cover for several reasons. A single matt unlaminated format with texturing. The card is quite soft and thin, being so black, it shows all blemishes and wear freely. The front has a large die-cut front window that has a plastic transparent ‘glass pane’ that has silk screen art. The insert sheet is illustrated too and when inserted into place, gives quite a 3D type of effect. This very specialised cover was printed and made in England. Includes the lyric ‘Giant’ inner sleeve and the card insert all as seen.

Cover Front: One of the most impressive I have seen for some time. The large window is immaculate with no burring, creasing or even rubbing to all four sides. The screen-printed transparent sheet is equally impressive with barely anything to fault. There is mimimal rubbing or creasing to the back textured card, any hint of rim impression gentle and faint, and certainly no penetrating ring wear or sticker issues. Given to the very delicate nature of this very specialised cover front, this has been well looked after and stored.

Cover Back: Again impressive with any rubbing little and light – a trace near the top edge, elsewhere even less and mostly very faint. This side especially rarely escapes ring wear and against the odds, has.

Top Edge: Very straight with any hint of rubbing very gentle and faint.

Bottom Edge: As above with just a little fine rubbing near the right end.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with minimal wear or thickening, also guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. Record enters on this delicate edge.

Spine and Text: Again impressive with any rubbing very fine, little and light as seen. Constructed with a very sharp fold crease, so ultra fine traces of whitening on the extreme ends will prove near impossible to avoid – and I am talking very fine. This is solid, straight with minimal traces of compression, the ends are pinched in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn, also nicely centred for good measure.

Corners: Any tip rubs are very small and light, all retain excellent shape with no bashes or dinks.

Cover Summary: Challenging and uncompromising, but when seen this nice, a cover of beauty. Clearly specialised, this would have been quite expensive to manufacture. Clearly well looked after, this impressive example should please many, if not most collectors.

The Insert Card: MINT: printed one side only and nothing to fault. Crisp and totally uncreased, the graphic fills the window to give a 3D type effect.

The Inner Sleeve: PRACTICALLY MINT: with barely anything to fault again. This has not aged and very clean and fresh. No creasing, discolouration and all edges unsplit with no repairs. Printed both sides and easily, the best I have seen tp date.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a superb visual copy that is very clean with lovely shine and solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence. Even under bright angled light, there are minimal traces of any surface marks or blemishes. This one should please most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This fantastic album plays up to it’s high visual grading with very little to fault bar the one rev click on side two as mentioned. I can see no reason for this even under a magnifier. A complex progressive roller-coaster ride with varying degrees of volume, including some very quiet passage. Easily in the King Crimson and Van der Graaf Generator league of difficulty, this record plays with stunning rich, clean and clear sound. This offers strong, distortion-free audio quality, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and detailed sound with no tracking issues*. Any surface sounds hardly register (the one click moderate click apart) and overall, an exceptional clean pressing. Challenging and intricate music played with high skill and flawless performance, Gentle Giant were thinking man’s prog – original, skillful and different. Their albums always superbly recorded and produced, and this copy does it near top justice, without doubt, hardly played. Few copies will better this early pressing significantly I feel sure. One to please many collectors, unless total perfection is mandatory, and good luck with that, strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
