Very RARE promo LP original/1st pressing -- GENTLE GIANT - Acquiring the Taste - 1971 Vertigo Records USA - VEL-1005. This is the 1971 first pressing on the hard-to-find USA Vertigo "swirl" label. And, this LP is an even rarer promotional copy (see photo of label, side B). Much has been written about this era of Gentle Giant, and this, their second release, is still considered a prog rock classic. Songs include, "Pantagruel's Nativity," "Edge of Twilight," "The House, The Street, The Room," "Acquiring the Taste," "Wreck," "The Moon is Down," "Black Cat" and "Plain Truth." Pantagruel is misspelled on the label (as Pentagruel). Vinyl is VG+/VG ...although this LP retains much of its original sheen, there are some sleeve scuffs and tiny surface marks that cause some background noise on some of the songs. There are no major scratches, and the LP plays all the way through without any loud pops or skips. I don't have a record cleaning machine, and some of this background noise might disappear with a good cleaning. Despite the intermittent background noise, the sonics are superb -- no doubt that this LP was cut from the original master tapes. If you are looking for a near mint copy, this is not it (I have seen near mint copies go for over $100.00). If you want a listening copy to hear all of the dynamics inherent within, this LP might suit you well. CDs and reissues of this album do not sound near as convincing as this original LP pressing. Vertigo "swirl" labels are clean (see photos). Gatefold jacket/cover VG++ (equivalent to excellent on some grading scales) ...moderate ring wear, a tiny bit of edge and corner wear ...no seam splits, no fading -- very well-preserved Unipak-style jacket/cover (see photos). All song lyrics and band photo are contained inside the gatefold. Includes original plain white paper inner sleeve. Enclosed in a protective poly outer sleeve. Stored in a non-smoking environment.
