Label Conditions: Both very clean and highly attractive with only ultra light and faint spindle traces and no wear around the hole area. Without doubt, this lovely record has barely been played.

Cat Number: 6360020.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 120 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Scarce on either Spaceship or the original Swirl label. Being honest, I have seen far more of these on the Spiral label than the slightly later Spaceship format, but of course, the serious Vertigo collectors want the Swirl no matter what the cost. And cost is a major factor on this one: Swirl prices are Spiralling almost out of control these days and this is a perfect opportunity for the progressive fan to own this brilliant album without the huge cost of a first press. For those who just want the music and cover with no concern of label design, this is superb example. Same record – different label – the sound is identical – your choice.

Brief Info: Superb debut album from these complex progsters. This is probably the most accessible of their early ‘Spiral’ albums, but is still fairly challenging. Famed for complex music patterns with many time, structure and tempo changes - you either love or loathe them, but for sure they were original and had their own unique very polished sound. Highly talented multi-instrumentalists, they usually appealed to fans of Yes, King Crimson, van der Graaf Generator and similar bands. This 1970 first album included their famous Gentle Giant artwork that, like most from this Vertigo era, was highly wear-prone. This has very little to fault and is up there with the best I have personally seen. The record looks hardly played and sounds fantastic with nigh-on pristine sound throughout. One for the vinyl collector who simply wants a near perfect record and clean cover and not the expense of a Swirl original. Bar the label, there is no real differences of note and with first issues now going well into three figures for even excellent (or lesser) examples, this could prove to be the ultimate bargain buy.

Cover Grade and Format: Well worthy of EX+, few wear this well. An unlaminated gatefold format. Printed and made in England by Howard’s.

Cover Front: One of the very best in the Vertigo catalogue, all prog fans will know this cover design well and here it looks fabulous. This front has little wear and any blemishes are fine, faint and minor. Ultra faint pressmarks in the centre of the giant’s forehead, but look hard. Clean, unfaded with no creasing, even though this is a spaceship repress, the cover retains the Spiral logo.

Cover Back: Immaculate bar one tiny rub near the bottom left corner. Bear in mind I have turned this cover for photographing to see the picture right-reading. Ultra clean, no ring marks or creasing, almost as good as they realistically get.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is near perfect and practically devoid of any wear or marks. The faintest of faint traces of set-off being ultra critical.

Top Edges: Barely any noteworthy wear, odd small rub near the right corner.

Bottom Edges: A few tiny surface chips or faint rub traces, more near the right corner on the front.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any wear and no feathering or trimming. The back edge is closed hence the record enters on the front.

Spine and Text: The spine is also in super condition and devoid of the usual rubbing most are seen with. Any present on this is ultra faint and small, a trace on the top fold and near the ends. Solid, straight, uncompressed and square, both right edges meet up perfectly together and parallel.

Corners: The corners have rubbed but mostly lightly, most on bottom right front which is near moderate. Most all retain fine to very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this very fragile 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better (and possibly very expensive). This highly attractive and one of the best within the Vertigo catalogue should please most collectors.

The Inner: The original polylined inner is included in around EX- condition. Barely any real wear but has darkned with age around the edges, this being glue darkening which few excape totally.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX+, A super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and quite solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with just ultra fine and faint surface traces that have no sound of course. Look hard to even see any, this a lovely fresh looking record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This superb progressive gem plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a highly demanding album that has a fair number of quiet passages. Few copies will outperform this early pressed spaceship significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been carefully handled and stored. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This record will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. All the top quality sound without potentially the very high cost, makes sense to me. Enjoy it for what it is, a progressive rock classic.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
