Label Conditions: Both clean, still fresh and attractive with spindle marks moderate and most quite fine hence they show little with normal full-on viewing. One fine line is seen on side one towards the right. More spindle marks than I usually like to see, but this has little reflection on the sound of this lovely early pressed album. The surfaces are very clean indeed and this typically difficult prog album plays very well without the often heard pressing issues that can blight Charisma records at this time. This being an EMI pressing made them more reliable.

Cat Number: CAS 1020.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. A very good solid weight.

Rarity: Quite rare as a first issue. This is a very fine all-round copy – one of the most difficult albums in the Genesis catalogue having quite a few quiet passages. I make no excuses for a 43-year-old record having the odd minor blemish or two. Most who bought records did so to play them and few will escape without the odd minor mark and audio blemish. But in terms of this quite gentle album, which I regard as one of the Genesis classics, this has little to worry about unless total perfection is mandatory. If an original one of these can truly boast CD silence, well it will be a copy in a many hundred and even from brand new it could not be guaranteed, especially on this label that is known to be inconsistent. This one is very well pressed by EMI and sounds impressive, and also has a very little worn cover that includes the insert. Nothing beats owning an early copy of any classic album and this one will please many collectors.

Brief Info: The classic second album from one of the UK’s most famous ever progressive rock bands. Early Genesis played complex, structured music and this is a fantastic album with truly beautiful songs. With quiet passages, this demands a clean pressed record to glean maximum pleasure. This vintage original offers something quite close to that – the pressing standard from this early copy is mainly clean with no inherent pressing noises. The odd brief crackle trace here and there with the odd gentle click realistically is expected on such material, and that is the case on this copy that probably has been played several times as the spindle marks suggest. But if so – the spindle marks are never definitive as many owners used the labels are a guide to the hole – this has been played with utmost care with the playing surfaces very clean and impressive. So overall, a clean and attractive example, but not for the highly discerning perfectionist who only demand perfection whatever the cost. I feel many collectors will be more than delighted.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, gently textured surfaces on the outside. The inside is smooth. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group with the correct B&C credits as seen on my close-up picture. Includes the original lyric insert and plain inner sleeve.

Cover Front: This very early printing has a slightly darker finish than some with rich colour and little fading, even to the spine edge that is very prone. A little gentle darkening to the edges, but the lack of rubbing, creasing, sticker marks and grubbiness makes for a superb looking front that will prove hard to find much better as an original.

Cover Back: The back is largely the same with no ring wear which is quite unusual, but most welcome.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Again superb with little wear or ageing again. The central graphic is breathtakingly beautiful – I just had to photograph it in close-up and prove how clean this is.

Top Edges: Any wear or rubbing is minimal and faint, both retain straight. No tip-ins, splits and both sit very flush and neat.

Bottom Edges: Fairly light rubbing to the back, the front has hardly any.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and still sharp with minimal traces of any thickening or burring. Any tiny blemishes only really seen viewed end-on, both guaranteed untrimmed. The record enters on the back.

Spine and Text: An impressive spine given all the facts – clearly vulnerable to just about everything, including fading if exposed to too much direct sunlight in storage. Solid, straight with very little wear and no compression. Also folded square, so the edges meet up very closely and parallel. Minimal rubbing, just a small chip near the centre and only very slightly age darkened. Even the folds are unscuffed and barely rubbed. No text was printed on this one, the graphic flows around and is practically all still present and strong.

Corners: All the corner tips have fairly small rubs, how many will avoid this being honest? Very fine to excellent shape and general neatness is retained.

Cover Summary: A difficult cover in impressive condition, any blemishes or ageing are small, light and faint – just polite hints of it’s considerable vintage – and personally, I have no qualms in that. A classic and difficult cover that should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: in terms of lack of damage or real wear. But this plain white inner has darkened to a fair degree with age. It has two crisp and untorn window circles and any creasing light. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

The Lyric Insert: EXCELLENT: only graded a little lower for one central fold crease. Still clean, fresh with crisp edges and little else to fault bar the quite neat fold. This was printed on colour, pale green paper, hence the back is coloured but has no printing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: I think this being quite conservative really. Although the labels have moderate spindle alignment marks, I feel this record has only been played quite modestly, and it appears with due care. Any surface marks are few and faint as seen under bright angled light with no penetrating scratches. A copy that is very clean with fine shine, intense black and very solidly pressed . Both playing surfaces are attractive and devoid of dulling or pressing marks, beautifully pressed by EMI for Charisma. Like the cover, a few small blemishes, but if absolute perfection is demanded (if you can even find one), they will have a premium price to match for sure. Visually again, this will please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This prog classic offers strong song that is practically free of distortion. A couple of milli-second crackles on the first song on a more intense vocal part but little else. It offers a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A few gentle sporadic ticks or crackle trace is near impossible to avoid on such complex, and often quiet passages. This too played on a very revealing system and this has always been a challenging album. Any surface sounds are very few, mainly gentle, light and infrequent – I will never say silent, but above average, certainly on this label and material. An intricate recording and work and not that commercial compared to their later titles. No pressing or cutting noises, this never certain on this label until you have played it. This copy will prove quite difficult to find better. It will offer the odd gentle reminder of what it truly is – a 43-year-old vinyl record – will any Trespass not? – I doubt it. I enjoyed this copy a lot, not for the perfectionist, but many, and even possibly, most fans and collectors will treasure it, it merits high recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
