Brief Info: The fifth Genesis album, and to date their most successful. This helped by the surprise hit single ‘I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)’. A brilliant prog-rock album that many regard as their finest even including guitarist Steve Hackett. A difficult album to find in better conditions – the cover pale and delicate – the record pressing often variable – the card lyric inner sleeve quite rare and seldom seen. This is a very fine copy, appearing little played, a couple of visible surface line marks do nothing and this was a joy to play-grade with little unwanted. Finding the card lyric inner sleeve is always a challenge as most copies include only the standard paper insert sheet.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group with the original B&C credit text. Future printings were made by other companies, some even abroad. This includes the briefly available lyric card inner sleeve, quickly replaced by a lyric sheet with a standard white inner sleeve.

Cover Front & Back: Early covers were very pale making them even more prone to grubbiness and especially fading from natural light. Later printings had a strong hue and colour depth. Both sides have traces of grubbiness and light rubbing, mostly near the internal flipback construction or rim area. Little creasing with any marks few and light, no sticker issues, the delicate colour has held up very well as well with no obvious light fading which usually affects spine and edge areas – this unaffected. So enough to politely remind of age, but this 1973 ‘Day’ cover will never be easy to find much better.

Top Edge: Straight with a fine, small central rub, not split or repair. So neat and still clean.

Bottom Edge: Patchy, mostly light rubbing only.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression patchy and light. All text is strong and unworn as-seen.

Corners: Any tip rubs small and light, very fine to excellent shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A strong example of this quite unforgiving 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This attractive original item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: or close to, cautiously graded as there were a couple of fine edge splits (one very small) which I repaired as neatly as possible to stop them potentially widening in future. So now these edges (left and right) now looked only lightly rubbed and intact. Not a great deal else to really fault on this quite rare unlined card inner sleeve, when they surface, they usually have heavy ring wear which this has avoided. This a deep green colour with minimal creasing, any record impression little and quite light with no ink loss on those areas. Just the corner tips and edges have rubbed a little, the bottom edge has little to fault at all. Fresh and attractive, this will be hard to find much better and it remains one of the most elusive original Genesis UK cover ‘extra’ pieces.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed on thicker than average vinyl. A copy with modestly light plays on all the evidence with any surface marks mostly light and faint as seen critically under bright light. A couple show more, but do nothing, there are no penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, few register. Visually a lovely first press record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This prog-rock classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Always a challenging album with several quiet passages in the true prog-rock tradition. Pressing quality was often inconsistent, many crackle and pop, even with pressing noises, especially on later copies. Few available originals will outperform this significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only quite lightly and has been quite well stored and handled. The odd polite remind of what is being played – a record into its 45th year – is near impossible to avoid, but this was a genuine pleasure to play-grade and I enjoyed it immensely with nothing of any real note spoiling the pleasure. It is likely to prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. This one of the finest pressings I have heard for an original for quite some time.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
