NURSERY CRYME
Originally released in 1971, Genesis' third album, Nursery Cryme is the first to feature the classic five-piece line-up of Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Phil Collins and Steve Hackett which would stay intact through 1974's The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. The album and it's first rate personnel showcases an instrumental power and theatrical flair like never before as displayed on the stand-out tracks “The Musical Box,” “The Return of the Giant Hogweed,” and “The Foundation Of Salmacis.”
FOXTROT
Foxtrot, Genesis' critically acclaimed 1972 release and fourth full-length overall, was the band's second recorded with the classic line-up of Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Phil Collins, and Steve Hackett. The album served as a major breakthrough for the band, hitting #12 in the U.K. on the strength of the tracks "Watcher Of The Skies" and the multi-part epic "Supper's Ready," both of which would go on to become staples of the group's live shows.
SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND
1973's Selling England By The Pound is the follow-up to Genesis' 1972 breakthrough album Foxtrot and fifth album overall. The 8-song set featured the same line-up as its predecessor and grew the group’s popularity even further with their inventive storytelling and arrangements coming into sharp focus on tracks such as “The Cinema Show,” “Firth Of Fifth” and their first U.K. hit single, “I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe).” The album also marks Phil Collins' foreshadowing lead vocal debut for the band on the acoustic number "More Fool Me."

The 1976-1981 era was a transitional period for Genesis on a couple of different levels, but the music that emerged within those years helped take a prog-heavy gang of musicians and turn them into proper pop/rock heroes.
A TRICK OF THE TAIL
Some have said that A Trick of the Tail feels like a spiritual sequel, at the very least, to Selling England by the Pound, but whether that’s because the band wished to return to that sound in the wake of Gabriel’s departure or that it’s simply the way their creative juices were flowing, it’s hard to say. Whatever the case, even setting aside how successful Collins’ time with Genesis ultimately proved to be, what was most important at the time A Trick of the Tail was released was the fact that it cemented Genesis as a viable commercial entity without Gabriel. Not only did it hit #3 on the UK Albums chart and #31 on the Billboard Top 200, but its sales were double those of its predecessor.
WIND AND WUTHERING
Genesis was working its way through some growing pains with Wind And Wuthering. After Gabriel’s departure, things began to shift within the band dynamic, and the flux was particularly felt by Steve Hackett, who – not unreasonably – felt that his songwriting efforts were being given short shrift compared to those of Tony Banks. The material is still solid, particularly the opener, “Eleventh Earl of Mar,” and the Hackett/Collins collaboration “Blood on the Rooftops,” but the end was nigh for Genesis as a four-piece.
AND THEN THERE WERE THREE
Like the title suggests, And Then There Were Three is otherwise known as The One After Steve Hackett Left, but it’s also where the tide began to turn commercially for the band, and in a very good way, indeed. The album features “Follow You Follow Me,” which provided Genesis with their first Top-10 single in the UK (#7) and their first top-40 single in the US (#23), while also spotlighting the members’ individual songwriting skills, with Tony Banks contributing “Undertow” and “Many Too Many” and Mike Rutherford offering up “Snowbound” and “Deep in the Motherlode.”
DUKE
While And Then There Was Three saw the band dipping their toes in pop waters, Duke found Genesis diving right in and establishing a new signature pop-sound in the process. “Turn It On Again” went Top-10 in the UK (#8) while “Misunderstanding” went Top-20 in the US (#14) and once Duke topped the album charts in the band's homeland (their first of four consecutive albums to do so) there was little question that this was the direction in which Genesis would be heading for the long haul.
ABACAB
The most curious thing about Abacab is that the band wrote an entire album’s worth of material, discarded it because the songs made them feel like they’d become a caricature of themselves, and started anew. We may never know what might’ve been, but at least we know what Abacab turned out to be, Genesis's second of four consecutive chart topping albums in the U.K. thanks to the trifecta of classic Top 40 singles, “Abacab,” “No Reply at All,” and “Man on the Corner.”
