GENESIS ''NURSERY CRYME'' THE RAREST ORIGINAL UK PRESS PINK SCROLL LABEL (B&C RECORDS)!!!!!! 1971 CAT NO. CAS 1052 AWESOME TOP AUDIO!!! (ONLY HEARD ON THESE PRESSINGS) WITH ORIGINAL E.DAY & CO PRINTED (TEXTURED GATEFOLD) 1st ISSUE COVER!
THESE ARE IMPOSSIBLY RARE AND THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER UK GENESIS PRESSINGS!!
Another from my personal collection, listed for its rarety rather than for its condition. These rarely ever turn up for sale! Being an avid Genesis vinyl collector I have most of the earliest UK copies in my collection and I will be featureing some of the rarest 1st UK Genesis pressings on this site very soon. You often see US pink scroll pressings but rarely ever original UK pink scroll press, at least in decent condition! Important to note These are the earliest to be released on this pressing which makes this highly collectable and sought after indeed) These are virtually impossibe to find in decent condition! The overall grading that I would give is at least excellent. The audio is truly cristal clear and vibrant throughout and plays without distortion or any signs of grooveware, I heard some static crackle and perhapes very light ticks\scuff noise in the odd isolated quiet place but I must emphisise that I heard nothing too bad that would spoil the overall audio experience in my opinion! Play tested at very loud volume on a top system two times prior to this listing!
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY MY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE UNIQUE CHARACTORISTICS ABOUT THIS AWESOME PRESSING!!!!!!!
The Charisma Pink Scroll Label was the first label design used on LPs released by Charisma Records. In the UK, they were used from Charisma's inception in 1969 until mid-1972, with the release of Lindisfarne's Dingly Dell LP (CAS 1057). This was replaced by the large mad hatter label, designed by Paul Whitehead of Genesis sleeve design fame. In the United States, the pink scroll labels were used in late 1973 and early 1974 on releases distributed by Buddah Records. Releases distributed by Atlantic Records used the small mad hatter label. Because Charisma had many bands who were relative unknowns when they were signed, many original pressings of early UK issues of albums from Charisma bands like Genesis, Audience and Van der Graaf Generator with pink scroll labels have become quite rare and sought after by collectors. Please also note that the first pressings of these albums were also on a far superior quality of vinyl. Distributed by B&C Records, the heavy, thick vinyl pressings have only ever been shoddily re-issued when Phonogram took over Charisma at the beginning of 1976 (with the release of Genesis' A Trick of the Tail LP)!!!!.
.Nursery Cryme is the third studio album by Genesis and was recorded and released in 1971. It is also the first album to feature the lineup of Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Phil Collins, and Steve Hackett, the latter two replacing John Mayhew and Anthony Phillips on drums and guitar, respectively in 1970 following the release of Trespass. This lineup would remain consistent until Gabriel's departure in 1975!!.
While this album was being written parts of it were written by temporary band member Mick Barnard. In an interview, Tony Banks stated, "Steve was in the band a very short time when we recorded 'Nursery Cryme.' All the guitar parts on "Musical Box" were actually written by Mick; Steve tended to play pretty much what Mick had played 'cause there wasn't much time to learn new parts. Most of the guitar on it is Mike anyhow - all the rhythm guitar, it always was. There wasn't that much lead guitar on it." - The Genesis Autodiscography - By Jon Young Trouser Press magazine, March 1982!
"The Musical Box" and "The Return of the Giant Hogweed" — both the major highlights of Nursery Cryme — became staples of their live performances!!.
Although not a success upon release in their homeland, Nursery Cryme became an unexpected hit in Italy, reaching number 4 in the LP charts - spurring on Genesis' European success - with the album eventually reaching #39 in the UK in 1974!!
All songs credited to Tony Banks, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Steve Hackett and Mike Rutherford!!.
- "The Musical Box" – 10:24 (lyrics: Gabriel)
- "For Absent Friends" – 1:44 (lyrics: Collins, Hackett / music: Hackett)
- "The Return of the Giant Hogweed" – 8:09 (lyrics: Gabriel)
- "Seven Stones" – 5:08 (lyrics: Banks)
- "Harold The Barrel" – 2:59 (lyrics: Gabriel)
- "Harlequin" – 2:53
- "The Fountain Of Salmacis" – 7:54 (lyrics: Rutherford)
Please Note: "The Musical Box" includes uncredited writing contributions from former member Anthony Phillips, having been based on a 1969 demo by him and Rutherford called "F Sharp". It is also said to include some guitar parts written by transitional member Mick Barnard!.
Though in my opinion not as polished in production terms as the albums that followed (most of the songs were only recorded on 8-track), Nursery Cryme was still a large progression from the group's second album Trespass.
Although the folky feel was still retained on songs such as "Harlequin" and "For Absent Friends", other tracks displayed a more aggressive and strident sound. Hackett's lead guitar playing contributed a lot to this, with strong solos contained within "The Musical Box", "The Return of the Giant Hogweed" and "The Fountain Of Salmacis".
Banks also contributed towards the more aggressive sound in various ways: for some time before Hackett's recruitment, Genesis had performed live as a four-piece, with Banks substituting for guitar by playing lead solos on his Hohner "Pianet" electric piano, played through a fuzz box. This technique can be heard on "The Musical Box" and the intro to "The Return of the Giant Hogweed". In addition, the band purchased their own Mellotron Mark II (from King Crimson). Banks employed the Mk II "three violins" sound to great effect in "The Fountain Of Salmacis" and "Seven Stones", whilst the climax of "The Return of the Giant Hogweed" used fuzzed Mk. II "combined brass"!.
The vinyl.
This vinyl looks AWESOME!!!Still retains its original gloss from new! This is the original heavy and thicker vinyl only found on these early pressings!!!!(HEAVY VINYLS IN MY OPINION PRODUCE BETTER AUDIO QUALITY THAN FLIMSIER LATER PRESSINGS) This lays perfectly flat on the turntable!!! When looked at under a strong light very few and fine surface marks\scratches\scuffs and sleeve removal type marks can possibly be seen. I can't see, or indeed there are no deep needle audio sounding scratches that would cause any loud clicks or pops! however these surface marks have very little but some effect on the superbe audio playback that in my opinion is absolutely superbe!!!
The Audio Quality
I have played this prior to listing and this was played at very high volume on a top system the audio is cristal clear and vibrant with (no) signs of grooveware or that this has been overplayed at all in my opinion !!!!! Please note! it is easy to be critical about 70s pressings, especially this album which features many quiet tracks. please allow for the odd static in the form of very light background static type crackle\ticks (only in a very few quiet and isolated places only) that might be heard during some quiet places but (not) consistant throughout the audio! I heard very light scuff noise for about three or four revolutions only during the very short quiet track ''For Absent Friends'' . But nothing too bad in my opinion as to spoil the overall awesome audio experience! Points to note! This vinyl has been stored in a case for at least 25 years and from my experiance constant cleaning before each play would benefit this vinyl, because i have noticed that the audio becomes cleaner each time it is played!!! (build up of dirt or dust in the grooves built up over years of storage contrabutes to a lot of very light background crackle) Also the fact that I can see some debrit on the vinyl after it has been played!!! I must emphisise the audio is awesome and very playable copy indeed!!!!!!! There is (no) jumps or skips I would grade the audio at least excellent in my opinion!
PLEASE NOTE! I ALWAYS ADD THIS DISCLAIMER! PLEASE ALLOW FOR LIGHT STATIC CRACKLE\TICKS PERHAPES DURING SOME OF THE QUIETER PLACES (NOT CONSISTANT THROUGHOUT THE AUDIO) PLEASE REMEMBER THIS IS A GENUINE VINYL THAT IS 36 YEARS OLS! AND WOULD HAVE BEEN PLAYED ON A SYSTEM THAT WAS 36 YEARS OLD!!!!!!!!
