Label Conditions: Both immaculate: ultra clean, fresh and attractive with barely a spindle trace to be seen. This an ultimate first pressing as well, confirmed and explained by the matrixes further down. Try finding this brilliant record better.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 138 grams. A very good solid weight, heavier than most.

Rarity: Much rarer as a genuine first issue – this a first-cut copy – with the large hatter label – later ones had the small hatter labels. The difference between first-cut and second-cut ‘first’ issues are the matrixes. First-cut have -1U matrixes on both sides. Second-cut ‘first’ issues have a -2U matrix on side two. Also first issues had an unlaminated cover, against the norm, the repressings had laminated covers.

Brief Info: The first live Genesis album and it was to date their most successful. Featuring five of their lengthier songs from previous albums, it did well to encapture the essence of the early Genesis sound. It paved the way for the highly successful ‘Selling England by the Pound’ that really got this wonderful prog band noticed. This is a scarce true first-cut ‘first’ format pressing, the difference being the -1U on side sides instead of a -2U. Rather more unusually, first issues had a totally unlaminated matt finished E. J. Day cover, later ones were laminated and made by James Upton. These are immensely difficult to find nice – and this is nice. The record is stunning, appearing barely even played, superbly pressed and with fantastic sound throughout, a rarer first-cut B&C credit record that could prove the ultimate upgrade for many collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: but actually looks better, I am being cautious as there may be a little enhancement to the front bottom edge area – this not certain – this being exactly as I bought it. A single matt finished unlaminated format with smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Group. This, like the record, a genuine first-made format cover.

Cover Front & Back: Both sides look lovely with way, way less wear than most seen. Clearly being unprotected, this is prone to all forms of wear, but this has little. There is a dull on the bottom edge on the front, which may be an enhancement by the previous owner, but as stated, this is far from certain and may just be how it was from new – I simply do not know. There is a little mild rubbing here-and-there, but both sides, the back especially are almost exceptional. Most have heavy rubbing, creasing and ringwear which this one has largely avoided. It remains clean and fresh with far more positives than negatives, it will take some beating.

Top Edge: Straight and totally unworn, this is very impressive.

Bottom Edge: Again straight, only very light patchy rub traces, all excellent for a black storage edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with barely any wear, totally unthickened, burred or trimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid but thin, straight with minimal compression, the odd small rub or chip trace only. The text is near perfect with just the odd tiny chip, also well centred on a narrow depth.

Corners: Mainly crisp and sharp with any tip rubbing small and light, cannot rule-out the odd tiny tip-in.

Cover Summary: Still a very fine looking example of a ruthlessly revealing and wear-prone cover, minor blemishes, but this should please many, even most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR MINT: a plain white solid unlined inner. This practically as made with no creasing, edge splits or repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and practically devoid of any noteworthy marks at all. As close to a full Mint(-) grading as they get for me without actually grading as such with two near immaculate playing surfaces. Both labels almost as new too and I am certain this record has hardly been played. Any surface traces minuscule, even viewed under my bright grading lamp. Finding this much rarer and elusive first-cut -1U/-1U pressing better will prove beyond difficult.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic early live Genesis album plays even above it’s high visual grading and beyond with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds hardly registered and this is an outstanding clean pressing, never guaranteed on this label. The odd sporadic tick or surface trace is nigh-on impossible to avoid, a live set with some very quiet passages, but this has hardly anything. This record is barely even run-in vinyl terms and the pressing quality even surprised me – not all Charisma were this clean and often they could be constantly crackly or even have inherent pressing noises. No such worries with this beauty, it could indeed be an ultimate first press upgrade for many. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This actual record will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. It will rarely be matched, let alone beaten.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
