Brief Info: The fourth album by the popular British progressive rock band Genesis. After receiving some critical acclaim, especially in the rock press, this became the first charting album by the band. A lengthy album for vinyl with no playing area wasted, it features their longest song in the epic side two track ‘Supper’s Ready’. Early Peter Gabriel era Genesis were less commercial than after he left and are still one of the finest exponents of progressive rock from that era. This a very early pressing that plays impressively – even with some surface marks that are superficial – this never easy on longer albums with some very quiet passages. I really enjoyed this one.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or very close to. An unlaminated gatefold format with the outer faces textured, the inside area is smooth. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Group, includes the plain white inner sleeve. Later prints were by Howards Printers (Slough) Ltd.

Cover Front: Clean, fresh and attractive with minimal hint of rubbing or ageing. Very few creases with just a quite fine one on the top edge showing a little. The lack of sticker issues on an unforgiving surface, always good news.

Cover Back: Very similar again with just a couple of three fine surface creases, again showing little. A back often ruined by ugly ring wear which this one has avoided.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Again impressive with any creasing or blemishes few and light. Note the original B&C credits seen in close-up, later ones were changed to Phonogram.

Top Edges: Both straight, flat and flush with minimal traces of rubbing. The back edge central area has a fine crack, possibly repaired, but is very neat and only seen with edge-on viewing, a minimal blemish really, but this stops a higher overall grading on this highly attractive all-round cover.

Bottom Edges: As above minus any crack, storage edges on such covers seldom escape with less than this.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Mostly sharp with any thickening little and light. Record enters on the back edge, the front is closed.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. Slight tilt being critical, this version has no text. The flow around graphic is still strong with any surface rubbing very little and light, mostly near the top of the upper corner.

Corners: Any tip rubs small and light, very fine or better shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very fragile 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. More often seen very shabby and aged, this is one to hold and admire and this lovely item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a plain solid white unlined inner sleeve in the EMI style of the time (this record was pressed by EMI as the matrix design and codes reiterate). Some examples had the Charisma promotional inner which are believed to be from very slightly later pressings. This again has aged little, the paper still clean with minimal darkening, no hard creasing with all edges naturally intact. Includes the patent number 1,125,555.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: arguably better. A fine visual copy that is clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence with any visible marks or blemishes mostly in the pressing itself that are superficial. Any usage surface marks very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches and the record plays very well (certainly compared to some I have heard). EMI-pressed, this gave a very fine account of itself, and as fans will know, this is a long and challenging recording with several quiet passages. Visually a splendid record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic prog-rock album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface or contact sounds are minimal indeed and overall, this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Being honest and realistic, a ‘silent’ copy of this album will prove near impossible to find – an album often plagued by contact noise, clicks and pressing issues – but this is little and I found this very early example an enjoyable listen. Few available copies will outperform this I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been generally well stored and looked-after within a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. The odd surface sound only politely reminds of what is being played, an original vinyl record fast approaching 50. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
