Brief Info: The fourth studio album by the British progressive-rock band Genesis. It received generally positive reviews on issue and was the first Genesis album to chart in the UK. Quite a long album featuring their epic classic ‘Supper’s Ready’ that occupies most of side two. This a fine first pressing with the B&C credited record and cover. Repressings were by Phonogram and on the smaller Hatter label.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with matt textured surfaces on the outside (later printings were smooth all over). Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group with B&C credits. First issue covers had red text on the spine that was printed in a vertical orientation. This one is such a cover, however, as so often is the case, the text has faded and now very faint (but is still present as I verified under a magnifier). Includes the Charisma ‘Gold Chase’ promotional inner sleeve as seen.

Cover Front: Another wear-prone cover, this front is still attractive with any front rubbing on the tips and a little on the top fold, little else. Generally clean and quite fresh with hardly any creasing and no sticker issues. These matt textured gatefolds seldom escape with much less.

Cover Back: Large the same, better if anything with less rubbing on the fold, the lack of ugly ring wear always a plus on these.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Impressive and clean, any rub traces or blemishes very light and small.

Top Edges: Both straight and flush with moderate fairly patchy rubbing.

Bottom Edges: Similar again with slightly less rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Mostly sharp with any thickening little and light. Record enters on the back edge, the right is closed and factory machine cut.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel, most of any rubbing on the very ends. The graphic still neat and present, this far less prone to fading compared to the red text. As mentioned further up, the impossibly fragile red text has faded to white and now very pale, so not so easily seen now. But this has/had the correct first issue downward facing text, later ones were standard reading. Red ink on spines is probably the most prone to light exposure wear and only more rarely does this survive unaffected.

Corners: Light to modestly moderate tip rubbing with fine to very fine shape retained with minimal traces of dinking and no heavy knocks.

Cover Summary: A strong example of this rarer first issue ‘Day’ cover, yes, the spine text has faded with some edge rubbing, but the main surfaces are still attractively strong as-seen. One that could prove difficult to find much better. This should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: and arguably better, marked down from plus for some fine writing on the address area of the entry form section. This Charisma promoted the mid-price series of albums as well as full-price ones on the other side. The top of one side included a form to enter a £1,000 competition and designed to be filled in and posted to B&C Records. So many would now be incomplete or even discarded. This has just some writing on the name and address area, but is fully intact. The closing date for the competition was 1st January 1975. This inner was not lined and remains clean, fresh with deep colour and hardly any creasing at all. It includes the PATENT No. 1,125,555. It has two external flipback construction and all edges are naturally intact and a shaped recessed top opening which is neat.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: a fine visual copy that is clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence with any surface marks fine, light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No major damaging stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little even registers. The odd tiny mark has the odd very brief contact sound only. This is a long album with the music areas ending quite close to the label rims, especially on side one. So the grooves are finer and more fragile, the album also with some quite passages and typical of the prog-rock style. So avoid the odd minor contact blemish here-and-there is close to impossible for any record of great age. Visually a fine looking record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little overall to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed as mentioned above, and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this early first press format copy I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played quite lightly and has been quite well stored and handled. Little at all spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record – these early Genesis albums are never easy and this was an enjoyable copy. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
