Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and highly attractive with very deep rich colour. Any spindle marks are very few, largely fine and reasonably faint. Being this dark shade of blue, these are quite revealing so a few can be seen more easily.

Cat Number: SKL 4990.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: 147 grams. a typical weight for this label, that said, this is one of heaviest copies of this album I have yet held.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Initially issued in both mono and stereo on the Decca unboxed format. The mono is near impossible to find and the stereo first issue is rare. The boxed version issued within the same year are not that easy to find either, especially ones with the very matrixes. This album did not sell well when first issued. A new band with no information on the cover bar the title – few would have even knew what this was or about. The somewhat bland cover gave nothing away at all, only the insert revealed more, but these often left behind the shop counter. So early issues in either format are elusive and seldom seen in decent conditions, the cover is massively prone to wear for all the obvious reasons and like most, this has some ring wear on the back and it appears a strip of tape was put on the entrance edge. This has now gone but left a very neat line each side, actually this just appears as an end-of-laminate line and detracts little. The record is very impressive and appears little played, and importantly it plays with superb, nigh-on perfect sound. Both the date-coded inner sleeve and lyric insert sheet are in terrific condition too.

Original Year of Release: 1969. This copy has a date-coded inner of 6-70 (June 1970), so very early indeed. This was totally revamped and reissued with a brand new cover in 1974.

Brief Info: In the long distant days before Phil Collins and Steve Hackett were involved in the creation of Genesis, this album was issued to the world on Decca records. Unknown and selling in very small numbers only, unboxed and the earliest boxed originals of this vintage debut are very hard to find. Even today, I feel this is still an under-appreciated album: more delicate and lush with fine use of strings, this has moments of that classic early Gabriel era sound that was to evolve and grow as did their audience – with time. This has more than a hint of early Moody Blues which I feel must have been a major influence on their early sound. An embryo for the success that Genesis justifiably enjoyed as their reputation grew. These early examples were packaged in a somewhat mysterious deep brown cover with the most basic information available to album browsers of the time, hardly surprising it failed to sell. But inside was a gem, a young band finding their way and creating a very interesting sound that was to blossom into the realms of superstardom. To hear a very young, but mature sounding Peter Gabriel was a revelation in itself and this pre-superstar line-up – in music terms, in their infancy, were ahead of their time. Prog music was not instantly taken too and many classics like this and others e.g. T2, also on Decca and High Tide sunk without trace. For Genesis fans seeking out this wonderful debut album on vinyl, well it’s a strong one I can highly recommend. The record plays beautifully and is the very best example I have heard for many years. I barely heard anything unwanted on a record that has some quiet passages, but being Decca, it always had a great chance. And this has not been ruined by any old unworthy record player and appears very little used. The cover has wear on the back, but how many don’t? Overall, a lovely early copy and if the music and sound is the priority (as it really should be), this copy really delivers.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): purely do to the usual ring wear on the back that few ever avoid. In context, arguably worthy of higher. A single format with front Clarifoil laminate, this covers the edge folds but not the back panel ends. The ending is on the spine edge. The back is matt finished and smooth. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace. It includes the elusive double-side lyric insert sheet and original blue June 1970 inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: Even though laminated, this is more often than not seen very shabby. The reasons being the very dark plain surface the makes even modest blemishes and wear even more evident and even exaggerated. This under Clarifoil laminate that regularly tightens and lifts. Well this one has avoided any lifting bar a tiny trace on the bottom left corner tip and barely any creasing. This is very good news as large heavy blistering will always ruin this revealing front. It retains fine shine, freshness and clarity with fwe marks and minimal traces of any rubbing or dulling. As mentioned above, it appears the original owner put a line of clear tape on the opening edges, So a line is seen on both sides, but it appears like an end-of-laminate line and does not really detract to any major degree. A front rarely seen without major issues, and this has little overall to fault.

Cover Back: The unprotected back is rarely, if ever seen without some ring wear, this has a moderate amount on the bottom left quadrant but little else. In terms of this cover, this is way below average in ring wear amount. It again has the tape end-line on the left edge, but it really does not detract in my opinion and is very neat. Very little creasing but some handling marks on the unforgiving very dark matt surface. The peep-hole mono/stereo indicator hole is immaculate, here it is filled by the blue inner denoting a stereo copy, as far as I no, it was not repressed on a boxed mono (unlike the Stones ‘Let it Bleed’). Overall, a more than respectable back.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both have hardly any wear at all, also still quite straight, Clarifoil covers seldom are, especially those of this vintage.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and very sharp, clearly the tape has offered the utmost protection. The end-line seen on front, back and inside the storage area. Guaranteed untrimmed, the record enters here.

Spine and Text: Solid and fairly thin, again quite straight with minimal compression. All text is present and quite well centred. Gold small type on black is not ever-so easy to read but here very easy indeed. The laminate is solid and clear with lovely shine, no scuffs and minimal creasing.

Corners: A very small chip on the top right, little else and all retain superb better than excellent shape with no dinks or creasing of any note.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this difficult and revealing cover. Difficult to say it’s attractive as such, being mainly dark brown, but in real terms – the front especially – looking very nice. It should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better. A heavy-duty typical Decca inner from this era. This has barely aged at all and is very clean and fresh, and more unusually, still white with practically no toning, marks or glue darkening. Both window circles immaculate, crisp and undamaged and the lining ultra clear and nigh-on crinkle-free. Hardly creased at all and all edges unsplit with no repairs, they are seldom see much better. This is dated-coded 6-70 (June 1970), as seen in close-up and is British patented with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text.

The Lyric Insert: MINT(-): and a mere whisker off full Mint. Printed on matt finished paper, clean, attractive, with the lyrics printed on both sides. Razor sharp edges with barely a crease to be seen, clearly hardly even touched before. No stains, writing or marks, this elusive and guaranteed original insert will take a lot of beating also. It even has the mono LK 4990 reference number as well as the stereo.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: and this by no means does this splendid record full justice. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with fine shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. After being inside a polylined cover undisturbed for many years, I feared this record would have possibly suffered ‘bag-rash’, but just faint dulling seen on the run-outs. This has compact grooves and appears unbanded (no link between songs). Any visual blemishes are few, fine and faint bar one surface scuff on side two that has NO sound at all, and this looks little played. Rarely will this vintage Genesis title be found much better - this is an old record, issued on the boxed label only shortly after the changing of the previous unboxed style. Visually a super example that should please many collectors, and for sound, most-all.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This lesser-lauded Genesis debut album plays even above it’s high visual grading and most-all above to the absolute maximum with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered, this too on an album with some very quiet passages. At times delicate, early Genesis rarely used volume in their music and absolute dead silence via vinyl is almost unrealistic, but this splendid, and typical high-quality Decca record comes as close as possible. Few examples, being early or later pressings will match or outperform this one I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp and remain fully focused, I feel certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Obviously avoiding vintage thick heavy needles that could have, and almost certainly would have damaged or worn these fragile, delicate groove walls. Nothing whatsoever spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. In its’ own special way, a pioneering entry into the world of progressive music, not bombastic or loud, Genesis approached with a more subtle and gentle beginning – but equally enthralling – this is pure class. This record will prove very difficult to find better and most will enjoy it and it’s one I can strongly recommend.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
