GENE MARSHALL & BARBARA FOSTER (?) -- With A Song In Our Heart -- ex. rare, original 1977 U.S. album. For fans of MSR Song Poem albums and Real People/Strange/Weird Music, this is one in a series of private press Song Poem LP's put out by the infamous Preview Records label -- basically scam records that paired amateur poets/lyricists with anonymous studio musicians who recorded their lyrics for a fee, resulting in some of the wildest and strangest songs ever put to vinyl. This album features one of the most prolific Song Poem artists ever, singer Gene Marshall aka Gene Merlino aka John Muir, famed for gonzo classics like "Jimmy Carter Says Yes" and "We Are The Men Counting Sheep" among countless others. A number of Marshall's songs have turned up on recent song poem CD compilations and he's been featured on NPR Radio for his demented work. Highlights here include two indescribably eerie, Tony Joe White-style swamp/funk numbers performed by Marshall and both written by Donatus Martin, "And What About It" and "I Couldn't Figure It Out." His bizarre Christian-themed "Saul Became Paul" is also very good. Marshall sings most of the songs on this album but there are also several numbers by an easygoing Country-Pop style female vocalist, most likely Barbara Foster who performed on several Preview Records LP's and 45's around this time w/ Marshall. A very hard record to find -- does not come up for sale often. See photo for track listing.
